How do you know if your connection is being rerouted through someone elses PC..?
The reason I ask is we have cable internet dureing the day I get 3000kbs dl'ed speeds...Around 4pm it drops to insanely low speeds as low as 2/kbs & this is the speed test from my ISP's site...There is very little traffic on my terreserver rarely ever gets to 1/2 capacity
Now I've called when my speeds are low (many many times) & they have no idea as to why..
When I do a ping test useing NeoTrace to my ISP the very 1st hop is to a "Unknown" Node
Name: Unknown
IP Address: 70.70.28.1
Location: EDIT
Network: EDIT
Registrant contact information is not available.
Anyone have any idea's..??? I've asked them what node this is & never got a answer..

Are you using a wireless router? That's the only way someone could be leeching your connection. Does it do it consistently at the same time every day or is it intermittent?

Nope Im just runnin a "normal" cable modem...It does it the same everyday around 4pm through to the next morning...
I ran hijackthis & it found these to be nasty Not sure WTH they were but I deleted them both..lol
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

Could be a few things,
-Your network may not have the load balanced properly,
-Make sure that port 43 on your router is open (for whois)
-Your TTL should return a lower value on each hop, if not, your isp should take you through a series of tests.
-Heavy internet traffic
I would suggest that you talk to some higher up's about running a line frequency test on your LAN connection.

Stocko they did all that after swapping my modem out to see if that was it...Nothing...
Phoned back complaining it was still slow..1st they said it was someone hogging all the bandwidth & they would warn the person..called back a few days later Then They said it was something wrong with a gateway I was getting 11% packet loss..I was like ok well fix it..They said it would be fixed within the week..(last week)..Called them yesterday they said theres nothing they could do...
Whats this..?? Your TTL should return a lower value on each hop

Here's a bit of light reading that sheds a bit of light on the TTL (Time to Live).

Also, it may be the server farm that has it's network out of balance. Your isp should contact them and enquire. My guess is that your isp is loaded up much heavier than what you're being told.

Cid6.7,
The rough explanation is that with each hop of a ping you will enter through a new or different gateway, The hand off from gateway to gateway should be finding you the best connection : ie, a lower TTL value is faster than a high one. That's a pretty crude explanation, but I hope it helps you.

Ok the dude on the phone said there was a problem with a gateway..& needed to be "fixed" could he do it from his pc or is it something that actually needed to be fixed by a technician..??

Problem with a gateway makes sense. If it was me, I'd ask for a technician to do it, but, you never know how savvy the person on the phone is.

You should probably run a full spyware scan too.. Microsoft anitspy is by far the best scanner. There is a new version out there that works on hacked versions of windows.

Only if the server is down or your nic card is falling out of the pc
502 - Bad gateway - A server (not necessarily a Web server) is acting as a gateway (or a type of routing device) to fulfill the request by the client (e.g. your Web browser) to access the requested Web page. An invalid response was received from an upstream server it accessed to fulfill the request. This usually does not mean that the upstream server is down (no response to the gateway), but rather that the upstream server and the gateway do not agree on the protocol for exchanging data. Given that Internet protocols are quite clear, it often means that one or both machines have been incorrectly or incompletely programmed.

I used to run Cable and had the same prob.... It turned out that every one in the neighbor hood had the same internet connection wich inturn leads to SLOWER bandwidth.. IE if you get on the net at lets say 5am every one is sleeping you have a wider bandwith compared to if you log on when evey one else is on you have slower

The 127.0.0.1 value that you mentioned in an earlier post makes me think that you're shooting your connection through a popular proxy server. (name hidden to protect your program's identity ). If this is the case, your pool of proxy servers is about 10. That's not many given the popularity of the program coupled with the fact that all their servers are located in the U.S. and to boot, problem starts around 4pm. If I'm close in my theory you may just be bogged down within the limited servers even though your isp server is only 50% loaded. Am I getting warmer?
