Just got new Atmega. Tried to program it. I was going to try Tomico--In Jeepers, when I go to Write Flash, I get an hourglass for a few seconds, then an error message "failed to enter program mode". I have it connected to my parallel port, which is what I used when programming MC (never had any troubles with connections there). All connections are tight. Any ideas?

Been doing some research. In one of the threads with instruction on atmega programming, it mentions putting the jumpers in program mode before putting the Atmega in the programmer. I can't figure out how to do that. A picture of my Atmega is enclosed.

I had the same message when trying to program my first atmega. The problem for me was that I had the atmega card upside down in the card slot. Look close at the card, mine had black letters on a black card that said this side up for programming. Also, use a short as possible cable or better yet plug the atmega card slot directly into the parallel port. Use an eraser on any card contacts that look like they might be oxidized.

Thanks, Stocko. My card does have black lettering on a black card that says "this side down". It's got 10 pins that fit right into the programmer, so I don't think I'm inserting it into the programmer the wrong way. Maybe it is the connection cable to the computer. It's kind of long. Unfortunately, both the parallel port on my computer is female as well as the port on the programmer. I tried to find a female --> male convertor, but couldn't, so I just bought a data/file transfer cable with male connections on both ends. After doing some more reading on Atmegas, I must have a jumperless one, since I don't see any switches.

What you may need is called a db25 parallel gender changer, BestBuy, Future shop carry them for about $16 bucks. Just to be sure that were on the same page about the card and the card holder. The card holder (some call it a programmer) will only fit one way onto the parallel printer port, it's the atmega card that may need to be flipped over in the card slot.

Also check the configuration in jeepers. When you open jeepers up go to file and select preferences and set to 0x378.

All 10 pin atmegas are jumperless.

can't you plug the programmer directly to the lpt port?

I must need the gender changer. I've tried all the settings in Jeepers, and none work. Also, I can't connect the programmer/card holder directly to the computer lpt port, because they're both female, so I guess I'll try one of those gender changers.

Have you tried flipping the atmega card?

there's only one way in which you can plug a 10 pin atmega.

ps. is really funny that his picture say "NoChinGue" you could read it "No Chingue" which means "Fuck Off" in spanish

Hey Jumbo!!!! I have the same card, and you just solved one of my problems... I kept getting an 019 error. Now that I took that little jumper off the card is now acknowledged. So how do I fix the black screen??

you can't use a data-file cable to run your jeepers program . The cable is not straight -thru like a printer cable extension that has what you need. I brought a data cable and it will not work for me . brought a printer cable and had no problems for 1 1/2 yrs. now

Make sure you are using the lpt port on your computer not a 25 pin serial port.

It is probialy a power issue. I was getting the same error. I had to mod my programer to get back in. The 25db doesn't put out enough power for the N2 stuff. Fine for N1. You have to wire it to a USB port. Look at my preveus posts you will find it in a post called if your locked out of your atmega post here.

I'm going to pick up one of those gender changers and connect directly to my lpt port. I think it must be the data cable I'm using. Thanks holiinone. I'll leave an update if I can get it working.
P.S. Thanks for the Spanish translation. Is that a message for Charlie from the Atmega manufacturer?
