I was thinking about testing a DVR IRD and I wanted to check and get some feedback as to which receiver I should look for. I am currently running 2 301.010's with external emulator boards and modded tsops. I assume that I would have to do the same with a DVR. Correct me if I'm wrong.
There were a few of the 510's on ebay and I was debating on what to get and what receiver seems to be the most popular and easiest to use for testing with emulation. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys, Gary

Hi
I'm not the flash expert but nobody has responded to your query so ....
A bud of mine has done many 501 and 508s.
There are certain TSOP chipsets to avoid.
I'm pretty sure you want DT chips for easy flashing...someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Most refurbs have the GT chipset....not easy to work with at all [flashing panel lights]!
I would however recommend you go to an internal emu.
All emus/AVRs/AVR-X/Atmega emit RF in the Emergency Aircraft frequency.
Internals are sheilded by the chassis and metal can so RF can't travel more than 30 feet. Max&mel emus connect the ground and switch outside the can which eliminates the RF to almost zero. Don't attract attention to your testing!

if your going to buy a pvr stay with the 501's unless you can do vidmods ;and even then you still may have to do one if its got gt chips. 510's have to have a jtag port added, for they don't come with one, plus they need to have a vidmod and hard-drive downgrade, which is alot of work. emu works fine on all the 501/508/510. it is the amount of work you want to put in them.

Also, 501 and 508 are same flash except the 508 has a larger 80gig hard drive.
Here's a couple words of advice:
Read all you can, and be sure of what you have before attempting to do the vidmod.
There are several different proceedures posted on the net. Just be certain the one you pick is for your specific board/model.
No matter what you may read to the contrary, it's not necessary to remove and "zero" the hard drive in order to "marry" it to the new IRD/BoxKeys.
All the info you'll need is posted.
It took me a while to get my 510 going, but it's worth it.
Good luck with yours, and let us know how it goes.
Regards,
BGW

Yes, the continuous "red/green flashing lights" on a PVR is a total piss-off. Read, read and read some more.
