Quebec cable company Videotron is suing Bell ExpressVu for $374.2 million, accusing the Bell Canada subsidiary of not doing enough to protect its digital satellite delivery system from piracy.

"The plaintiffs [Videotron] have alleged that Bell ExpressVu has failed to adequately protect its system against signal piracy, thereby depriving the plaintiffs of subscribers who, but for their alleged ability to pirate Bell ExpressVu's signal, would be subscribing to plaintiffs' services," a statement from Bell Canada said.

Bell ExpressVu said it has a strong defence and would "take all appropriate actions to vigorously defend its position."

The lawsuit is an expansion of one Videotron first laid against Bell ExpressVu in August. At that time, the cable company was seeking $1 million in damages.

Last Friday, Videotron amended its claim and is now looking for "$49.5 million for profits allegedly lost over the last three years, $314.7 million for alleged future losses and $10 million in punitive damages," according to the Bell release.

Videotron has about 1.5 million cable TV subscribers in Quebec. It is a subsidiary of Quebecor Media. Bell Canada is owned by BCE.

The CRTC may revoke BEV's license. Expect BEV to bring the big guns out.
This time it is for survival.

How much of this part of the statement is true?

Are the providers really being deprived of income?

I think not. I'd never sub to any of them.

Kinda like Clinton's imputed income tax balloon he floated in his first term in office.

:D :D

Videotron is a joke, their video on demand is for old movies, Kinda hard for them to make money from me ( potentially ) since there is no cable service in many places in Quebec. Videoton is only in a very small market in Canada so I guess they are dreaming of vapor profits or some sort of Xmass wish. Sorry Videotron and their parent company Quebecor are Nuts. Basically cable, Bell, star choice, offer the exact same programming for almost the same price and they call it competition. What a joke of a lawsuit hope there is a judge with a brain out there.

Lets see, roughly $600/yr per household for cable service. They are looking at about a loss of over 200 000 customers for 3 yrs to make that lawsuit hold water. I love these woulda, coulda, shoulda lawsuits. Anyone else tired of people making money for doing nothing? I'm jealous, LOL.

well they are french
but even if they go they still want to keep Canadian passports and Canadian dollars??this does not compute
think the states would take them off our hands
and i must wonder if they will take thier share of the national debt and might as well let them keep videotron to
