You need to check out the DishMod group at Yahoo. It has all the info you need replacing/upgrading hard drives in the 501/508/510 Receivers. The following is from the DishMod hard drive replacement/upgrade file:

THIS INFO WAS COMPILED BY TEC-MAN -PR

**NOTE: READ ALL BEFORE YOU START!!!!

i notice that if you dont put a Virgin EEPROM image. The receiver will show you errors 4**. To successfully mount a hard disk. Select a hard disk from the compatible Hard Disk List.

error codes 0422 , no data in sector 3 131071
error codes 04ee, the hard disk is Incompatible
error codes 0457, bad ide cable, Worg hard disk mode(master/slave/cs), no power on hard disk) damage hard disk
If the hard disk is corrupt then the receiver will erase the hard disk and rebuild the catalog data.

**NEEDED TOOLS AND PROGRAMS*******

1 A NEW COMPATIBLE HARD DISK THAT MATCH THIS LIST, IF IS NOT NEW, YOU NEED TO USE FDISK TO
DELETE ANY PARTITION AVAILABLE THEN ZEROFILL THE FIRST 3 SECTOR(USE DKSPROBE.EXE, DO A
SEARCH IN YAHOO TO GET IT)
2 IRDR.EXE
3 FLASH EDIT(LATEST vERTION)
4 jKEYS (VER2.9.9 IS GOOD)
5 A j-TAG)
6 Virgin FIRMWARE 063.BIN
7 Virgin EEPROM IMAGE.(very Inportant)

**NOTE: PUT THE IRDR.EXE,FIRMWARE 063.BIN, VIRGIN EEPROM(if available), Jkeys IN THE SAME
DIRECTORY FOR FUTURE USAGE.

If You Put A 40gb Hard disk. The pvr will download a firmware for 501, if you use a 80gb
hard disk the pvr will download a 508 firmware, if you use a 120hard drive the pvr will
download a 510 firmare.

Use a virgin firmware like p063,p070. and if you dont have
a virgin EEPROM for those firmware you can use IRDR.EXE to create them, it will make four builds select
the one that is needed for your pvr. Check the build config, inside the board of the PVR,there is a label
near the hard disk power source, there you can see what vertion is your PVR.You Can Check too in the menu with your remote control
by pressing menu,6,1,3,look the last four letters in BOOT STRAP VERTION- (EXAMPLE) 21AB****,
THE **** are the vertion you need to use.

In your windows xp go to start, run, then type CMD then click ok, go to the directory where the irdr.exe
program is located and make sure that the (firmware 063.bin) is in the same directory run the irdr.exe -e
(firmware 063.bin).

Then you will see 4 files will output. Keep the one with the same 4th letter as your IRD. Delete the rest.
Use jkeys to upload the eprom file and the (firmware 063.bin) you have,
Upload it to your reciver After You Put In Your Ird Number And Box Key with FLASHEDIT.

remember to checkmark the crc fix, and save it like personal dump, Use a name you can remember(EXAMPLE FIRMWARE 063.BIN)
then connect the new hard disk that is compatible with the PVR. power on the receiver and you need to verify that there
are no ERRORS on screen. then select one of the step that match your situation.

1>if you turn on the receiver and the pvr start on the SIGNAL SCREEN, Do a switch test then go to cancel and
another screen will ask for a new download, select yes and let it update, it will take more than regular couse
is formating the drive. after it finish, you have a new Hard disk working. if you dont see any error on screen.
It means that the hard disk is working correctly. CONGRATULATION!!

2> if you turn on the receiver and the adquairing screen is on, then you need to push in your remote, menu,6,1,5 and
select the option withouth my permission. then select save, and then press 1 then make a switch test, when it finish, turn OFF
the Receiver and let it update it, depending the hard disk you put in the PVR will make the update take longer. after
10 minutes you will see the proccess start couse a green light will turn on, then it will blink(It Means is updating).
when you see the green light turn off, it means it finish the update, and you have the new hard disk working.
if you dont see any error on screen. It means that the hard disk is working correctly. CONGRATULATION!!

GOOD LUCK!!!
