View Full Version : 510>508 locking up
I have a 510 with hd mod to make it a 508. It has vidmod and oj1 switch, buffered jtag, and AVR-X jtag extention. It's running P304 that was stream updated.
This box works great except for one thing. It locks up when left unattended for a period of time. When I watch TV, and change channels, all seems to be well. However if I just leave it on a channel for a while, hours later when I return, I see a black screen. I change channels and black screen only. I get freeviews and guide, but everything else is black.
To return the box to full functioning state, I just pull the card and re-insert it. After is finds signal, all is well again.
It’s starting to piss me off because if I set a timer to record something, I can be assured that it will lock up before or during the recording.
Any ideas?????
:(
again, anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

Your problem goes away when you pull and reinsert your card. Pulling the card causes 2 things to happen: (1) Swiping the card tends to clean the card contacts in the system (2) It also forces your receiver into a hard reset. Does powering the receiver off and on have the same result? If not, instead of pulling the card the next time, cause the hard reset by holding the power button down until it resets, or just unplug the system. Either method will cause the reset without moving your card. If it seems that the card must be moved then perhaps try cleaning the contacts on the card with a soft gum eraser or applying additional pressue to the card contacts by inserting a thin cardboard spacer on top of the card.
If you find that the issue is definitely not card related, then perhaps it is heat related. I don't know if your 510 is in an enclosed cabinet, but you can try moving it to a cooler location, even in a different room away from the heat of your audio video stuff. You have a UHF remote which works through walls so see if a location change changes the temperature.
If the problem is temperature related, you can locate the weak component by removing the 510's cover, turning it on and focusing a hair dryer on various components to see if that leads to black screen.
Kwizzler,
All real good advice, and spoken like a true technition. Thank you very much for the reply.
It's the reset that is doing it. Power cycle has the same results. the heat is very unlikely as it is in wide open air in a cool room. I have checked the temp of the box when I return and find it down, and it seems pretty cool so I don't think heat is the cause.
Another troubleshooting clue is that when the box is in the BLACK SCREEN mode, as I said before I can get freeviews, but I can also get to the PVR functions. I tried to watch a recording instead of just resetting the machine, and it comes up with an error-020 "the smart card currently inserted is not valid for this receiver" a few seconds after the recording starts to play.
Also, I left the power off (via remote) last night and went to bed. when I got up this morning, the box would not power back on with the remote. I had to do a reset to get it back up.
UPDATE!!!
AVR-X Ver1.05 seems to have cleared up the problem. At least so far. I will report back if it happens again.
Thanks Magic Man. :)
Updated Update!!!!
I screwed up again. I was hoping the 1.05 was the answer, but no such luck.
I'm expecting more AVR-Xs today or tomorrow so maybe it's the card.

Ohms,
My 510 running 1.04 has had the same thing. I took SJ advise and played with the tiers with no change. (0001 - 1000) works just as good (or not so good ) as 10 levels of tiers. With the cable left on or off. Can't seem to go 24 hours without the AVR-X going black without a reset. Stayed at 1.04 when I heard 1.05 dosn't autoroll and seems to have the same troubles for you as the 1.04.
Merry Christmas and have FUN Testin'
Same here with my 510. I have tried everything mentioned and then some to no avail.
Looks like it's really a bug in the AVR-X Software. I pulled the card and fixed up a ROM102to10 for this box. It's been running flawlessly since I did that. :)
I love the AVR-X, but I wish the software developer had some help. They could sure use it. (he says in a polite and respectful way, while at the same time indicating the software is really garbage)

i have a 508 ird ..i`m about to jtag it but want to make sure that i`m doing it right ...do i ground r-79 ? and i beleive that the 508 has 2 tsop`s but after reading on this site it just tells me to erase sector # 52 ? if anybody can confirm this i would be greatful ...thanks
Hi Nailer,
It would help to know what you are trying to do. Are you just trying to get a backup of your TSOP? In that case, try with jkeys first without grounding anything. It may just save the image. Mine did.
Also, you question about sector # 52 is not really a question. If I read between the lines, I think you might be asking how to get your 508 to stream update the software. If this is the case, then erasing the sector corrupts the flash, and if you do that, and then connect the sat dish cable, and turn off the power with the remote, you would get the stream update you are looking for.
also, yes, the 508 has two FLASHs. Flash1 and Flash2. Flash2 is the one you want to save and update. Flash one holds the favorites that that sort of thing.
To reflash your 508, erase flash1, then erase flash2, then program flash2 without exiting the jkeys programming screen. Then before you exit jeys itself, program your eeprom with a virgin image made by flashedit.
Note, after you save off your flash images, make sure you open them with flashedit, and be sure they show good CRC.
Good luck

ohms..thanks
yes i`m trying to update my firmware to p 304..haven`t had alot of experience on jtaging..so by the sounds of it if i earse sector # 52 then restream, i should get what i`m after ? ..i will save my tsop first..
Here is what I would do.
Save off flash2
Open saved flash2 with flashedit and check that crc is green. That way you will know if you have a good copy or not.
Open menu, hit 6, 1, 6, and set to factory defaults.
Erase SA52 on flash2 and stream with a virgin or matching married card in.
if that dosen't work, try....
Erase SA52, SA54, SA60, and SA61 (all in flash2), then restream w/o a card in......that may let it go
Sometimes these PVRs are hard to get to update. If you saved your TSOP, you can always go back so there is nothing to lose...........I would hope..... :)
