Just bought a DSR 6000 Tivo off fleabay for 15 bucks,, was told it's in perfect working order. well it'll sit there all day powering up. I know pretty much nuttin about dave stuff, other than i miss him (lol) i bought this in anticipation that there might some day be a hack, and i'll be ready. so on with the question. does this need to detect a sat dish to continue powerin up, or is it junk and goin back to the seller?

It sounds like the hard drive is bad, or at least, the software isn't installed properly. Your description is pretty vague, so I can't tell you for sure. What is the message on the screen (if any)? What is the sequence of events when you turn the power on? What screens does it show you throughout the power-up cycle? How long do you wait?
The system does not need a satellite dish to power-up, although it takes a bit longer to boot while it tries to find one. Eventually (ten minutes, probably, max), it will settle into a black screen with a message that the satellite could not be found. You should then be able to get to the menus and look around at the configuration.
If it doesn't do that, then the software (or harddrive) is bad. If it doesn't give you any message on the screen, then the hardware might be bad. If you didn't pay too much for it, then it might be worth making it work. I got one off flea-bay for $51 that had a 40GB drive in it. That was a long time ago, so I have no idea what they are going for now.
