With the upcoming HD channels being released, nothing will change with the old ones. You, while using the 6000, will still receive the same HD channels as you do now. Even when the Winter Olympics start, they will be viewable with the 6000. The newest channels that Charlie has to offer in HD will require the use of the newer Mpeg4 receivers. In my opinion, the only thing worth watching that is coming with the new HD channels is the ESPN2-HD channel. The rest look and sound like crap.
So, don't worry. The 6000 is still going to be useful for a long time.

I can't believe that if you just got a 942 HD DVR, and already have the Dish 1000 installed, that it will still cost you $99 to have them come out and unplug your old receiver and plug in the new one.

For the moment, I`m getting ESPN2HD on 9425. It appears to be on 129, TP 19. Not sure what tier is getting it, but may be in the engineering tiers since I have them in to get the LA HD channels 9970-9973.

I now have a 301.013 with avr-x and thinking of purchasing a 6000 on ebay..
#1.is it worth it for all the trouble.
#2 because of the connections is the regular sat channels better
#3 is there really that much different hd content on dish
#4 will I be able to pick everything up in the "Windsor, Detroit area"

Do you need the 8psk module on the 6000 to get satellite HD (not OTA HD)programming on D*sh ? If so, is that the same for B*v?....Thanks.

Yes, you need the 8psk module for Dish, but not for Bev.

Yes it's worth it, when you buy one make sure you get the 6000U that has both the Enhanced HD Module 8PSK Module and 8VSB Tuner Cartridge for OTA channels here is how looks like:
http://tech.dishnetwork.com/departmental_content/TechPortal/content/tech/receiver/rollover/6000.shtml
If you can't get the 6000U get the 6000 upgraded to both cartridges, here is what I'm talking about:
Enhanced HD Module
http://tech.dishnetwork.com/departmental_content/TechPortal/images/tech/8psk02.gif
With an Enhanced HD Module upgrade, the Model 6000 satellite receiver can receive more High Definition programming using new state-of-the-art satellite technology. The module installs into any Model 6000 DISH Network satellite receiver. The Model 6000u already has the Enhanced HD Module installed in it.
The Enhanced HD Module uses 8PSK (8 Phase Shift Keying) to more efficiently modulate satellite signals. Not to be confused with compression, this more efficient modulation method allows DISH Network to greatly increase our HDTV channels while using the same amount of bandwidth.
8VSB Tuner Cartridge
http://tech.dishnetwork.com/departmental_content/TechPortal/images/tech/8vsb.jpg
8VSB stands for 8-Level Vestigal Side-Band and is an adopted standard for receiving digital off-air signals. The 8VSB Tuner Cartridge is used in the Model 6000 receiver. The cartridge is installed in the #2 rear panel port on the 6000 receiver. As it's name suggests, the 8VSB Tuner Cartridge allows the Model 6000 receiver to deliver analog and digital off-air broadcasts.
Without adequate off-air reception, you can enjoy a cost savings to the Model 6000 receiver by not having to purchase the 8VSB tuner cartridge. With adequate signal, you will need to purchase a suitable off-air antenna (not sold directly by DISH Network) to receive the various off-air signals in your area.

If you want to modify it to be able to record HD content to your computer hard drive and than burn the to DVD-R's here is where you can get one already modified with USB output 720p/1080i

According to a dish rep, all hd channels will move to mpeg4 within the year. Looks like the 6000's future is not so bright, so enjoy it now.

Yes the receiver will still work on mpeg2 channels, but hd will be mpeg4 within the year. Confirmed by dish themselves. Hopefully they will miss their date and take longer.

I don't think they will take that long, Dish is now moving along with their plans move all Internationals to 61.5/148 from 121 and aggresively roll out MPEG4. Notice Nashville loicals are now available in HD and it is not even in the top 5 DMA's. They are going to require mpeg4 receivers to receive programming as all those receivers will be cardless and FTA's can't get mpeg4. This is probably why they aren't sending any ecms's. Swap all 101's for 102's increase encryption and then offer all customers attractiive lease options for new receivers. Basically if you look at DTV's and Dish's future plans they are not going to allow sales of any receivers as the only way to get them will be to lease them.
As for testing there will probably have to be a crack for cardless receivers, Fta's will have to support Mpeg4 or you will probably have to use a computer card like DVB's. I guess we will have to enjoy what we are getting until it comes to and end temporarily. Eventually something will break through I can't see the FTA manufacturers just sitting back as they are making a fortune selling these receivers.

The 8psk is for Dishnet HD channels it without it you should still get all the dish channels,..no HD so just leave the HD tiers out.
