Anything that replaces a rom card is technically an emulator. Generally when people are talking about max/mel or maybe AVR6 emulation. In this case an eprom image is written to either the atmel 8515 chip (AVR6) or to the atmel2313 chip (max/mel or it's versions). Then, your computer runs the software that allows you to decode the stream. The computer communicates via a fake rom in the case of AVR6 and through a small circut board soldered into your receiver in the case of max/mel. Emulation used to be the best way to go by far. It probably will be again here soon too. I don't like that it needs a modified tsop at this point. Still it is up and running as good or better than Penga's rom10to102 fix right now. It's not as easy as other fixes to get up and running but certainly within the realm of most people I think. Max/Mel is the way to go IMO. To go max/mel you will need some decent soldering skills.

I think at this point Emulation is far behind FTA. If your just now asking I say go with FTA. Coolsat5000platinum receivers are my choice!

Hi BiggerBear

I'm now beta testing both Windoze and DOS versions of Cemu97A with autoroll. The FTA boys said that was impossible. I've been running emulation with the same equipment for over 5 years without spending a dime....I think that says a lot.

My main concern with the future of FTA is it cannot accomidate an ASIC.

Max&mel emulation is cheap, reliable and FREEWARE supported. True RS232 emulation will be here long after the FTA's go the way of the Dodo bird. Since AVR-X, Syndrome and the 311 hack, there are now plans in the works or emulating the entire TSOP. No more JTAGs, flashing, ECMs, etc.
Just another file that gets loaded.

My 2 cents.

Ya
But I'm running BEV and Dish with all the Satellite121 locals on the same Receiver with no problem. cancom You can't say you are!!!
FTA will never will go 153.
I just want people to know FTA is great. I play with EMU myself, but it's not something that you can buy and have running in 5 minutes like the Coolsat5000.

cancom = Your statement is not true - I'm sure you sepnt at least a dime!!!

I have ran an auxed card with Dave on EMU till the lastest (AND EXTREMELY EASY) with ol Chuckie and I have also played extensively with plastic,

Basically EMU is better than canned beer, sliced bread combined.:) You just can't beat it, no card needed and not a lot of PC

All the info you need is within these pages. Mind you there is some BS mixed in that set me back a tad when I built my latests system, basically that was a couple of post that said you couldn't open the dish.bin in Niagra Edit and it turns out that's the easiest way to do it. As long as you ignore those posts you'll OK,

Good Luck

I don't think Cancom stole his stuff, I think what he meant to say is he bought what he needed and built an EMU and hasn't spent a dime in the 5 years since. Cancom has good taste, I know he spent many dimes to set his up since he doesn't mess with junk :D , but once your have your system up, what else is there to buy? Like he said, just another file....BTW that entire TSOP EMU sounds fantastic Cancom....

On the CoolSat5000 I was wondering if you might could help me, this friend of mine bought the same one, the guy he got it from (and many others) is milking people dry making them pay for key changes, not using autoroll if they can, my friend only was getting 110 and I hooked him up a switch to another dish to get 119 and this "dealer" tells him the channels will just come in, I got it on 119 with my sat finder but 3 days later and still no channels, we cannot get in the set up menus' at all, it asks for a pin #, when my friend called and asked for the pin# the dealer told him that factory installed and he didn't know it. yeah....also he started losing channels about 3 days ago and this dealer is still waiting on some keys can't fix it now, could you by chance tell me if he could key in the new keys without having that pin#????

Any easy way to clear that Pin #? It's the first one I have seen, and I have never read a single post about FTA. Don't have a clue, and really don't have the time to research it (I ain't getting paid here, this is only a hobby for me) for this fellow.

I agree with Cancom's doubts about FTA's ability for the long haul, I would rather get 110 and 119 pratically forever with something that I really don't have more than about 50 bucks in, than to get 3 sat's for a short while and have to start all over. But since you have EMU too I can see you taking advantage of it while it's there for the taking, you have a good backup.

The Coolsat5000 comes with the default password 0000. The Coolsat5000 does Autoroll and gets more channels than you get with EMU (I know this for a fact, because I Play with EMU also)
The latest NORW_113 bin gets flashed with a program called Coolsat Pro Loader2.2 and a DB9 Straight thru cable Female both ends. I built my cable with left over EMU parts(Round phone wire and DB9 ends) The cable for the Coolsat5000 uses the same Pins as EMU 2,3 & 5 except both ends are female. I made my cable 20ft long and it's hooked up all the time.
If your friend wants he can flash the new bin over what's on it now and do a Factory Set. Put his LNB settings in the Dish Settings menu and Auto Scan the sats he points to. The Coolsat scans the channels in Dishnet Order. I can setup a Coolsat5000 in 5 minutes.

Hi BiggerBear

Well maybe 5 dimes...after all I do build all my own goodies....lol.
I have upgraded computers when I didn't need to and gone from AVR to max&mels. Sort of like adding wire wheels to the car that already runs great.

Yes, I've also run FTA....shhhhhhhh!
It worked as advertised but while I was testing the fixes were far and few between....maybe got into it too early....got pissed and sold it.

Hey there Jimyt

Yes, I guess if you count the PVR's I've blown the 10 cent budget. Now that HDTV is looking pretty tempting....Charlie, we need more HDTV channels!

Keep well guys

Cancom knows his shit. If he tells you something, you can pretty much take it to the bank.

That would be great, but since the dealer told him the thing was factory set and he couldn't tell him what it was, he obviously doesn't want him to find out how easy it is, only if he was dumb enough not change the password. I will call him and have him try 0000, where might one download those files??

jimyt, those files are available right here at Mili's, in the public download section.

Hey Cancom i just bout a SEASON/LOGGER INTERFACE(MULTISEASON, SEASON INTERFACE 2) aka Emulator from ebay for the card part for programing the 311 using a loader. and now i found this thred about emulating smartcards
does emulating freeze like the amega128 and other avr's? i am now rethinking my plans of hack the Emulator up and just adding a plug and header so i can do both

Properly mod flashed IRD with internal max&mel and a good computer [not fast, GOOD] will run as well as plastic and 100% better when there is an ECM.

I was into emulation w/ a Max&Mel card and CEMU on a cheap PC. Very successfully, for a long time till the Stream changed, what a year ago? Have had to fork over to DirecTV but I much prefer Bev.
I still have my glitcher etc but if I get back to fooling around how many channels are locked out now and what's the likelihood/occurence of ECM's?
Thanks

Hi

Well you good choice of hardware has save you lots of $. Your max&mel just needs a reflash, the IRD needs a modded TSOP flash and you are good to go. Dishnet has all channels open. At the moment I still recommend Cemu95 and update the keys when needed....Bell well that's another story.
