A friend of mine has a coolsat 5000 and his picture quality is not anything like a "real" dish receiver. Is this normal for FTA?

Would like to know cause am thinking about getting an FTA receiver but if the picture isn't going to be that good I will pass.

I have never seen that, Perhaps he has bad cables between the receiver and tv.
If he has a long cable run between the receiver and the multiswitch it may pixlate like weak signals sometimes, But we all know to keep the switch close to the FTA by now.
Another thing is on the sat scan you will pickup all signals ( You all do your own scans I hope, You will get alot more than loading channel master patches), Some spotbeams may be weak and you normally would not get those with a real dnet ird, But do with FTA, Well weak signal and pixlating. Thats normal. If it's a problem just delete the weak channels in the channel menu of the FTA.

Hes watches only dishnetwork channels. Doesn't have the knowledge or time to set it up for anything else.

hmmm...maybe I will give fta a try.

I have two 60' cables from LNB'b to Multiswitch, then a 100' cable from multiswitch to receiver. I get a crystal clear picture and if anything better picture than my mother's B3V subbed equipment.

Did you try the Yellow Button? The picture on a Coolsat5000platinum can be adjusted on the receiver it self.
You can adjust the - Brightness, Contrast and Color - by Hitting the Yellow Button on the remote while on a Channel .To make adjustments change the Mode from Default to User and then you can make changes. You can then leave it set to User.

Not sure who you intented that for BB, but I'm not complaining about CS5000's I am their biggest fan. Mine is absolutely top notch.

I doubt the guy who started this post played with his friends receiver in an attempt to get a clearer picture.

No I didn't play around with it. I have never actually seen the receiver up close. I have seen the picture and it is not very good, but it does sound like its more to do with his setup then the receiver itself. I will pass on this info to him and see if it helps.

Good to hear as I think I will give fta a try.

I seem to be having the same problem - the picture quality using component video is terrible - looks like there is interference of some sort.
I have tried 2 receivers with the same result , and tried the cables with a DVD player (the picture was perfect)
also the picture looks over-saturated and the contrast/brightness seems to have no effect.
Could this be a firmware issue? I've tried 114 and 116 with the same results.

I have since purchased a pansat 3500sd and can tell you there is no picture problems with it. I am using the s-vid connection.

I will try the component out when I get home tonight and see if it makes a difference.

In all fairness, the first Coolsat I purchased did have a technical problem.
The second was flawless.
So there may be a quality control problem with them.
But they do have a warranty.
