I've done a few of the easier methods of xbox mod's. 1) version 1.5 or lower xbox's. 2) purchaced xecuter 2.3 - 2.6 solderles modchips and a mod chip programmer, software, bios, and install instructions can be found at the xecuter web site, or here at mili's download centre I think?. 3) found and downloaded slayers auto installer 2.5 or 2.6 and burn't a iso to a dvd-r disc, plus read the read me's for slayer's, and away I went......So ask your questions, I hope I can give you a hand...

If you want to use linux then you can choose an mod style you wish. Here is a link to the xbox-scene.com forums where you can find some great info about linux:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=22

Check out the pinned topics and go from there. As for buying an xbox, the older the better. 1.0-1.5 you can flash the onboard TSOP. I think 1.0 and 1.1 you can have dual bios onboard. 1.6 and 1.6b you will need a modchip. Here is the thread on identifying your xbox version, whatever you buy:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=174260

And finally here is the FAQ forum link (lots of good reading!):

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=23

I hope this helps, come back if you have more questions.

I just switched from Evox to Avalaunch last night. I like the clean interface, but mostly i like Qwix. This little proggy sure makes game management a snap. You can even create an iso right off the xbox hd accross the network.

I'm probably behind the times. Anybody have a better dashboard they suggest?

Also want to use linux part time on the box, but the controller is a pain in the butt.. What is the best setup for a keyboard and mouse for these boxes?

Slick.

Yeah, the USB to xbox cables are nice. You can make one yourself, but if you not into that you can always buy one. I use XBMC myself, I love the interface and the scripts are awesome. I just installed a caller id script so when I watching a movie on the box the caller id pops up on the TV.
