technical question-soldering station

This is the only place I know to ask this question!
I was just given an Xytronic 168 3c soldering station--been using a 30w soldering iron for years.
It is 60W auto temp controlled, with an anolog meter.
It heats up quickly, but as soon as it reaches set temp the meter instantly "pegs" all the way over to the red zone. This happens at what ever temp it is set at(300F,400F,600F,etc).
I would really like to get this station working. Any suggestions what to start looking at, or any better internet sites to post this question.
