WELCOME to the year 2003
a RF (radio freq.) remote has an antenna that is about 6 inches long and the remote will work from about 75 feet away even through walls

much better than infrared remotes

ok what you have is a 2nd gen rca and it should have a "remote input" on the back

if you are new to this hobby and want to keep it simple I would go find an rca 222

it must have an infrared sensor on it somewhere
I do not know what to tell you
maybe someone will pop in that has a 412
