I bought a used 430RG to mod. The only test I performed before the mod was to check if it turned on and stayed on. Being satisfied that it stayed on for a few minutes, I proceeded with the mod. It has the Intel chip and the M28 flash. The erase and programming went fine. When I plugged it in to test it, it worked fine for about 10 minutes when it just powers off. The receiver cover is off and it's on top of the entertainment center out in the open. I'm sure it's something that's overheating. It seemed to turn on again fairly quickly and would stay on for another 10 minutes and then it would shut down again. I've checked the set up options and it is not set to shut off after a period of time. I've erased and reprogrammed the flash a few times to see if the flash was corrupted and nothing changed. When it did shut down, I unplugged it and I touched some of the components to find out if anything was unusually hot. I found 2 transistors (3 legged components) that were hot to the touch. One is located at the front side which is connected to a heat sink, so it should be no surprise that it's hot. The other one is located at U14101 and it was hot to the touch. I was wondering if I should replace this or if there is something else I should be looking at. It's probable that this receiver was sold because of this problem, just wasn't thorough about the initial test. Any help would be appreciated.

i did a pro bono mod for someone on here saturday. the first thing i would tell you to do is reflash. the transistors you touched are fine, trust me. did you remember to cut the trace and send the intel chip to ground as per the instructions? let me know and we can find out what the problem is.

I've reflashed a few times and got the same results. Yes, the traces were cut, but the chip was not sent to ground. I'll give that a try.
Thanks

I'll describe my set up a bit before I get into the details of what I did.
I use the jtag from mrwhitesjtag, so it's battery powered. I just solder the 6 connectors to the jtag pad with the ground lead soldered opposite at pad 10. The only difference between the directions here and the instructions I followed are:
1 installed eeprom lock
2 connector to lock was connected to 5 V and not 3.3V
I checked the trace that I cut and it's the same trace as shown at this site, just a different location behind the card slot as per MrWhitesjtag's instructions. Skipped the development panel part and just went to flash programming. I tried you suggestion to send the intel chip to ground by changing the eeprom lock position, but jkeys could not detect the chip. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you had to send power to the chip to unlock it. This is the way I did it for the 430RGA's I modded. So I decided to throw the switch so that 5 V was sent to the intel chip and it erased all sectors fine. Shut down jkeys and sent the chip to ground as you suggested restarted jkeys and tried writing the flash to the chip, but got this - error programming flash at offset 0x7fc00000. But when I restarted with the 5 v sent to the intel chip everything went fine. The receiver works fine, except that it shuts down after 10 min. I'm still all ears.
