Yes, a 485 will work with a Hu, a 486 won't.........
A 485 is a souped up 430/450...........
Consider yourself lucky , the HU will work and you get AC3 Dolby Digital 5.1 to boot !

also 430 to 450 to 485 all 6th gen........

Ok, so 485 WILL work with a HU and 486 will NOT work? Is that correct? I read the opposite somewhere else. I really want the 486 because the design matches my Bose system. What are the differences between the two? The specs seem the same on RCAs web site. I finally found a 486 on eBay, now I just hope it will work! Thanks...

Zutoo, I'm watching an RCA 485/HU in my living room as I write this. Can't help with the 486 - not familiar with it.

The 485 is the deluxe RCA 6th generation. Mods available, same basic board as the 430/431.
Some semantics for ya,
The 486 is a RID IRD.
Cut thru the crap, means the receiver marries the card, not the other (old) way around.
I wonder if
A) This info is stored in the eprom, and
B) If a hard reboot will clear the eprom.
May as well add C) how do you hard reboot the 486?

The 435.455.486, 7th gen receivers have an additional chip, it is speculated that chip plays a part in the RID process, but no one has been able to find out the exact contents of that chip. So, for now anyway, those IRDs are p4/p5 only.

I'm fairly happy with my 485. Haven't compared S-video to the Component video yet. The sound on DD5.1 broadcasts is excellent. My one bitch is the slow guide. #2 bitch is the lack of locals I used to get with a 222.
