View Full Version : Stupid question - is it necessary to ground the dish?
Necessary-No
Recomended-Yes
Everything will work just fine if you do not ground the dish. Even if you ground the dish, it is no guarantee that lightening, should it hit the dish, wouldn't blow the shit out of everything anyway. If it can be done, I would recomend you do it. But it probably will never make any difference if you do or not.
Don't forget about the grounding block. You should at least use one of those.
I grounded my dads... and had nothing but problems..DTV told me to unground it.
If you think it will stop a lightning ask 4X4 :)

ground it to the circut breaker box. you should have a copper wire allready conected there from your ground rod.
I think what midwest meant was to run a wire from your dish or grounding block to the grounding rod for your home electrical service box. Since all of this is outside, this should be easy to do. The grounding rod for the entire home goes 6 feet into the ground. It doesn't get any better than that if you are looking for a ground.
Addendum: Actually, the best ground in your house is your cold water pipe right where it comes into the house or just about anywhere else along the pipe...or the grounding rod for your breaker box, which is outside.

Here is a trick that is NOT code compliant, but better than nothing.
Get Coax with a ground wire molded onto the cover. You will find it listed as direct burial cable.
Run it thru the window, and ground the dish to the A/C outlet.
Unplug the coax from the receiver in storms, or make sure you have a surge protector/lightening arrestor on the coax before it gets to the receiver.
This is far from desirable, but better than nothing.

Exactly, just ground it to the same rod as the breaker box and you will be fine. I had a professional dtv installer install mine and that is where he grounded mine from.
