I just bought a 311 from a going out of business Radio Shack. Are these receivers good to test on? I read somewhere that they are cardless, but this one has the slot, but it looks like someone lifted the card. It has the card number on the box, so I'm sure there was one at some point. Is this receiver any good without the card? What $$$ worth is it? What would I need to do to test with it?
Thanks

The 311 is a cardless receiver but does have a card slot. I have one in my RV and had it out the stream for awhile, when I just recently hooked it backup it took about 15 minutes to update.

Like I said, there is no card with it. Can I still do this? And what will this tell me?
Thanks

It sounds like you had it previously subbed and missed the desub signal. Is this correct? If it is a cardless receiver, whats the slot for?

The slot can be enabled by DN if the onboard chip was ever out dated or they decide to send cards out for them.
Exsubbed units, the older the better, Rev 281 and 283 are best, can be opened just like any rom 102 and reprogrammed.
I have a feeling you just locked yours by letting it update, bummer.....
You can remove the chip from brand new or never subbed unit, and use it on a board in another receiver, but not in the one it came from, as you cannot retrieve the receiver number and boxkeys from a never subbed or new unit.

Same that applies to a 311 or 811, applies to a 111.

I haven't done anything yet to the one I got at Radio Shack. Is it worth keeping? So you say it doesn't come with a card? Why does the box have a coded number for a card then, just like the ones that come with cards. So if this is a brand new unit and never been subbed, can I still test with it. How do I find out what Rev it is?
Thanks

There is an internal (read: circuitry) card that has to have a number as well to work with Dish Network. That is what you are seeing on the box.
There is an interface for the cardless units, Mili sells it for $40. I think you could, if so inclined, build one for considerably cheaper. The plans are somewhere hereabouts....

Brand new never subbed cannot be tested, there is no way to obtain the boxkeys.
Exsubbed units have that info on the card chip, new ones don't.
The rev can be seen onscreen in system info.
You can remove the card chip, glue it to a board, and make yourself a rom 102 card equilivent, to use in another receiver.

So is this something worth doing, or is it just too much of a hassel? Is this receiver worth keeping? I paid $30 for it. They said I could get my money back if I didn't want it. Is there someway of checking it out before deciding whether to take it back or not? It appears that someone had bought it originally and taken it back. I'm wondering if they didn't put it into the stream (ex-sub) Is there someway to check it out without screwing it up if it is ex-subbed?
Thanks

Only way I know is to read the chip and see if there is receiver data on it.
Check onscreen, see if it is a 281 or a 283, a 283 well may be exsub, 281 may or may not be.
