are the channels wide open or do you have to order ppv et al and just not get extra charges for them?

The whole platinum package just sounded like a huge screw-you operation by directv. I mean, they know dealers are going to buy it in droves and split each sub up to 10 different users, all they'd have to do is have a locationID system (I'm sure they do, but I havn't had dtv for years) where they could call and ask you to prove you had those receivers in your house. If the number the dealer sub'd with doesn't work or he can't prove all 10 are there, they kill that sub. DTV made a ton of cash, the dealer made some cash, and all the people at the end of the line get screwed.

Actually when DTV sees that the receivers are not plugged into a phone line they will disconnect the account. Say good bye to your $8,000. Actually it should have been $7,500.

hmmmm

I dont see why we cant build a device that will foward the phone calls from the recivers to the authorized subs location, and from there thro a second line let it forward the information to the number that the recivers are trying to call.

That way dave thinks the recivers are at the location they are supposed to be at.

Untrue, who has ten phone lines in their house? You could have up to four or five of those receivers in your house, two at the cottage, one on your RV, one in the workshop/garage and one in a tree house if you really wanted to. Direct tv cant dictate where you should have phone lines, if they did, nobody except the odd millionaire with a huge home would have this package.

I used to have 7 IRD's subscribed plus Tivo. I had two at my house, 2 at my dads. 2 at my sons and 1 at my inlaws. I set up every receiver and hooked them to a phone line. When you set them up you add the block caller id, *68, in the outside line dial string. It worked for over 3 years.

lurch, this will not work anymore. If you call a toll free number their is absoluetly to way to stop the other side from getting your phone number.
An 800 number is a number that forwards the call to a regular number for and example 800-333-4444 would get forwarded to 201-234-5678. Each 800 hundred call completed is billed to the business, with proof of the telephone number that called them. This also goes for 866/877/888 numbers.

I am not saying what you said was bullshit, I know it cannot be done anymore.

what did you do, stack 10 tv's in your living room?.....how many dishes or what multiplex arrangement did the installer use to bring them all up?....hmmmm....that "splitter" alone is almost worth the price of admisssion....lol

Exactly. Since 800 numbers pay for the call, they get calledID even if you block it using a service called ANI (Same as callerID but cannot be blocked).

Thats exactly who the package was marketed at. There are lots of rich millionaires with money to burn who are looking for the most pimp plan they can get. 8 grand a year is nothing to some people.

Yeah seriously, DTV is only handing out so many of these subs (there is a cap on them), I bet they are going to keep an eye on them and probably check up on them. They were really designed for millionairs and I bet they are going to watch out for the avg joe who is going to try to split up the sub. I bet if that catch you they will cancel your sub and not refund any of your money.

I know of someone that has done that and it works. A sub is shared and all the irds call into a server and then the call is transfered over to DTV.

still would like to know the logistics of having dtv installer wire up 10 receivers in that guy's house...i'll assume he doesn't have a mansion (maybe he does).....

i hope it works out for the guy..that works out to about $67 per month per receiver and would be a great way to get rid of more than a few sat pirates

their price was $7500...dont know where that other $500 came in unless it was taxes

i talked to a rep once that said Spielberg...yes..that one.......had 25 units they billed him for...of course...when you have several houses this is easy to justify

wonder how many the star wars guy has?

George Lucas could of purchased DTV ahead of News Corp if he wanted too! Anyways back to this Plat. pkge, could easily leave some plugged in and explain multiple residences. As for the others, RV, remote cottage getaways, hunting camp with no phone service or cable, hence satellite.

Thing is I'm wondering what kind of deal was made with their content providers. It's called Pay Per View for a reason, the provider has to be paid each time their product is rebroadcast. Everyone has watched at least one movie several times, now with multiple residences and of course house guests ....well you get the idea, so perhaps that's why it's that expensive.

However, Howard Stern did a New Year's PPV many years ago and screamed like hell when the checks came in. They were taking over 50% of the Gross Sales and called them bastards and swore he would Never do another PPV!!

So that $49.95 Boxing match or UFC, probably $20 goes to the producers!! No wonder they're out to stop piracy!!

Know D!SH phoned my dealer and said all receivers had to be hooked up to phone lines by the end of the week. Gave them every excuse from we didn't have a land line to cell only.
They canceled the sub at the end of the week.
We only had 4 hookups.

I heard the whole idea of the package was so DTV would have a reference should the card be compromised, then when they start sending letter etc they can sue for an actual amount because a value has been assisgned to a wide open card.

I don't know about the Platinum package, but I have a DTV supscription, and have NEVER had a phone line hooked to the IRD. Still running for months now with no phone connection.

All right, I had posted this a while back when the titanium package first came out but I guess I'll go ahead and shed some light on this again. The package is called "Titanium". It is a programming package that has all available dtv channels. It has sports programming, spanish, foreign etc. No additional receiver fees, dvr service fees, hd, protection plan etc. Only limitation to this is that it has to call back the ppv's through a phone line. Ok, now the good news. The first year of the Titanium package is $7500 upfront with a credit card. In dtv terms it is labeled a VIP account, not a REG account. The startup offer for the $7500 is up to 10 receivers. Of course, the type of receivers doesn't matter so the most cost effective method would be to get all hd-dvr's which are the nicest and the priciest. Now,since there isn't a limit to how many receivers you may have on a titanium account you may still purchase additional equip at regular price, so lets just say you decide to get another 20 more regular receivers. That means that at $49 each that would add another $1000 to the price, meaning it would come up to $8500 with a total of 30 receivers. Now, $8500 divided by 30 receivers comes up to each receiver costing about $283 a piece per year, divided by 12 months each receiver only ends up costing $23 per month....... Interesting indeed. Now, about the call backs, in reality since these are VIP accounts, there is only one call center in charge of customer service, you even get the special number to call so you don't have to wait in queue. They all don't really need phone lines, remeber, you're VIP, just tell the rep when first setting everything up that you'll get the phone lines hooked up at a later date, then it is simply a matter of labeling each individual receiver and making periodic call backs to keep the ppv option working. While this may sound a little far fetched, it is a great way to save a boat load of cash.
