(CBS4) WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. Many baby boomers are choosing a life on the road over retirement. A shortage of truck drivers has prompted the American Trucking Association to recruit retirement age boomers.
Ken Fulton and his wife, Leah Serrano, hope driving a big rig will be a good mix of working and travel.
They're students at United States Truck Driving School in Wheat Ridge. They were lured into changing careers by the prospect of making more than $100,000 a year to travel as a truck driving team.
"Our children are grown up and now we get to be on our own and see the country," Fulton said.
"That's what we're interested in, we want to see everything that we read about," Serrano said.
At the driving school, the majority of students are still young men but the number of baby boomers getting their commercial drivers license is increasing. Across the country, the trucking industry has looked to "boomers" to fill a shortage of drivers.
"We've trained anywhere from senators, we've trained lawyers, we've trained doctors," said Jennie Knoll from the U.S. Truck Driving School. "Sometimes they want to get out of that particular field and just go, get behind that wheel of that tractor trailer and just drive."
With the trucking industry eager to attract more baby boomers, life on the road is getting more comfortable. Some trucking companies are giving their trucks bigger sleeper cabs and truck stops are adding amenities like nail salons and healthier menus.
Those comforts and the money are a draw for new husband and wife driving teams like Fulton and Serrano as they graduate and receive their driving school certificate.
Now they hope to find a new way of life in the cab of an 18-wheeler.
"You get to experience the whole world while you're going down the road," Serrano said.
The American Trucking Association predicts the shortage of truck drivers will reach 111,000 in the next 8 years if the industry doesn't recruit more people.

SJ, that's no shit.... Have you seen some of those sleepers? They're friggin' apartments with a CAT up front....
There's one truckstop I frequent that gives out cards (like trading cards) with rigs and thier owners.... Some of them are unbelievable.... You have to stay on the road to pat for the damn thing....

Peterbilt was toying with the idea of putting in a toilet in the deluxe models. Not sure if that ever came to be.
I know several guys who have Satellite dishes. Hell, one of them was my HU card supplier there at the end of it's days.

Y'all forget about the APUs (Aux power units): many states have no idle laws and with the price of fuel it makes sense to invest $5000.00 in one if your truck did not come with it. Pays for itself in less than a year and it is much quieter than running the truck all night even if it is legal to do so.
I don't know any OTR guy or gal who doesn't have one of them.

$ 5000
I and have a $1,500 using the produce 220 volts at 8 KW
I get a $500 power unlit that produce 120 volts 5000 WATS
Bandit5906

APUs are not generators. Sure you can get a cheap generator and find that it will not do the job that an APU will do. The APUs are diesel and the exhaust comes out the stack.
Many noobs bought generators and thought they would do the job: they do not. They have scrapped or e-bayed them for a good APU which will last where the generator will not last, makes a lot of noise, shakes the unit to death, won't run all the electrics + heater or air conditioner.
$5000.00 is a good price (some cost more, btw) for something that is designed to fit your truck and has a great guarantee and doesn't need a separate fuel source.
If you were a driver you would understand, IMHO!
lets see,,,, I would piss in a bottle in a truck but no way am I shitting in one.
Showers I have seen, not worth the trouble when A box of baby wipes will get you to the next real shower.
$45 a year, maybe but work your ass off and be gone all the time...
APU!, Fuck the no idle laws, The engen does not produce enough bad shit to hurt nothing and it uses even less fuel to idle for 10 hours than most would think,,How many gallons a hour on idle LEFTY?....
the big condo's are nice but you live in it to pay for the thing and mostly like was said it is government(FEMA) full time or nascar drivers rigs....
maybe I covered it all if not I will be back..
OH AND my buddy woods, dont fool yourself man, It is not that far off..
Way back to the top..MArk, Yes he needs to keep her, Her mom is hot and if it dont work out he could be his sons own grandpa :)

fubar;
OTR here(non-team) and I saved almost $7500.00 this past year with my APU! As an O/O my bottom line counts for me! Fuel is way too expensive even if you are using 20% bio-diesel. Nothing to do with laws and emissions, but what I wind up with in my account is what I care about. My Cummings uses about 1.2 GPH and the APU uses about 1.7 gallons per 7 hours. At $3.00+ per gallon it all adds up.

o/o is good for alot of people, the ones who drive for a living....and yes in that case every penny counts! man over a single year there are alot of things that make a big difference. I dont see how you guys do it, Drive all the time that is. I could never be a truck driver! I did pull shimmy shakers for awhile but also had to get my ass out and put them on blocks and taker the people wheels off so they would feel more "at Home"
