Do you get any errors while erasing or programming the Atmega? Just want to narrow it down...

You can try doing the 'ECM E433' trick on your 3900.

Put jumper on Atmega as if you were programming card. Insert in IRD. When you get the error 019 (Smartcard not inserted correctly), remove the jumper (or put it in 'play' mode) while Atmega is still in IRD. See what happens.

No, what I mean is put the jumper on Atmega as if you were programming it (If it's 2 pins, cover both - if it's 3 pins, cover the 2 that say 'programming').
Then insert in IRD. When you get the error 019, leave the Atmega in IRD slot, carefully remove jumper from the 2 pins (for the 2 pin model) or remove jumper from 'programming mode' and cover the 2 that say 'Play mode' (for the 3 pin model).
All the while leaving the Atmega in IRD.

This may be my problem. I dont want to be ignorant but when you say jumper do you mean cover it with something or is there a switch, on my atmega theres 3 holes where it says prog and play. Is there a how-to on this subject. Thanks
It's a jumperless Atmega!

I have the same problem. 3900 with P143 software. Atmega128 18mhz clk. I have tried all the software versions I can find and the jumper trick. Still Error 019 on screen all the time. Any suggestions? No errors when doing a program. I am using JeepersDx version 2.1.0
