View Full Version : Gas prices dropping suspiciously fast, why?

I'm interested to hear your guys' opinion of why gas prices are dropping so fast lately. Is it a political reason or an economic one? In other words, is this an election year political maneuver in an effort to help get/keep the GOP in office, or is there a legitimate supply and demand reason for the steep decreases we are now seeing?

I think they cut back on refining diesel, fuel oil, kerosene etc. and put all their capacity into the $4.00 / gallon bonanza and overproduced, shooting themselves in the foot by creating a glut. You notice there is no corresponding decrease in other refined fuels. It will be interesting to see what effect this has on fuel oil with winter coming. If politicians could control the price of gas, why would the controlling party ever allow the price to go up and get everyone grumbling at them in the first place ?

Overproduction? Highly doubtful. We're approaching the cold season, furnaces starting up in 2-3 weeks max. There was also the fact hurricanes did not hit hard this year.

This is politics. Dropping the price helps insure to keep the political status quo. Maybe they like republicans, may they like manipulating republicans, but one thing is clear: they like the landscape as it is and don't want it any different.

The main reason is Politics then, the oil companies. They don't want the Democrats in office because they were going to heavyly tax the oil companies so you know they want no part of that and as far as politics go yea its an election year and if you look at past history and oil prices they always seem to drop by the time the elections start. If you go back to may of 2006 there were no major problems to force gas prices up, no Gulf hurricanes, as far as Iran is concerned theres no change from then to now, so that theory is out. Summer driving is over but according to triple AAA 21% fewer people drove over this summer, thats a fact According to Oil Companies they no longer are using Ethenol Mix they switch to winter blend..... Bottom line its all Bull Shit and with the GOP in trouble there throwing everything they can at us to put these ass holes back in office, just so we can get Screwed over and over again......

Another question......Do you think gas prices will rise just as fast as they are falling after November 4th?

will all depend on who is in control after elections

Yes and thats regardless of who's elected. We are going to hear, A much colder winter is in store for the east coast and mid west so this alone will drive up oil and heating costs, Iran will pull some shit and that will trigger gas prices to increase and also lets not forget North Korea once these 2 assholes pull some shit all bets are off and my guess is gas will stay or go back up to $2.79 gal for regular..... Oh yea one more thing, should there be a hurricane this year in the Gulf well that will add about 15% to gas prices just on fear of damage from the hurricane..... Makes for interesting strech from dec-feb

no ethanol was in gas all summer now its been removed and winter additives are now in it... just another game by the oil companies..... Oil companies claim they had to adapt for ethanol and thats why there was a big spike in gas prices.....

sure smells like washington to me...... especially when you have a oil tycoon as president...... enough said.....

Here in oil country, we Texans can see why it is.
There is less importing of oil and more pumping happening.
The oil companies are booming down here.
You can go to just about any oil company here, and new ones are starting every week, and get a job starting at $14 an hour.
We are using more of our own oil and less forgein.
When Bush opened up the reserves a few months back, that allowed prices to come down, because it was our own oil.
Same thing now only we aren;t tappig our reserves.
New derriks are going up all over the place down here.
We are finally doing what we should be doing, and that is using our own resources during these times.
US has some of the largest oil deposits in the world and we have just sat on it, waiting for the rest to dry uo , so to speak, in the mean time the US has paid higher prices for oil, expecting payoff years and years down the road.
It's good to see these rigs going up around here again, it;s been too long.

[Edit:Well said satan & lefty]

Shall we call this one the wanker conspiracy??? :D

Gas is based upon the price of oil. Now admittedly, who knows where the fuqq they get the gasoline pricing formula, and not disagreeing they have been breaking it off in our asses. OPEC sets the price of oil, not the liberals nor the conservatives. Not the Democrats nor the Republicans. So pull your head out of your ass and blame them! Also a note, Canada pays the same amount for oil as USA, anyone care to guess why Canadians pay more at the pump ?

Canadains pay the same as the US...????...where the fuck do you live.....?????....LmFaO....we are paying .95 -$100 a litre...?...ya that's like $4.50 a gallon...LoL....the reason we pay this price is to cover our useless fucking Liberal health care coverage...and that's a whole other story ,,,,,Been fucked over so hard and so long by the Liberal's up here in Canada it's a shame.

Put btester on it...he could chase some limos and carry some signs and surely it would get solved!!! :D

Gas is at $2.10/gal (a few at $2.00) here today, about $0.75 over inflated IMO. When I was a "lil Swifty", my Pa gave me a quarter to get gas to mow the yard, that got a gallon and about nickel in the pocket. I'm under 50 before I hear the "ol' fucker" comments :D

The other big reason we pay such a high price is that our Liberal gov't won't allow us to produce our own fuel.. Same as we don't produce or process our own beef...we have Lakeside and Cargail up here doing it for us...LoL. We have the CBC to be thankful for...t just rock's.....ohhh..ya that's right ..our tax's pay for that netwok to ...LoL....Make's ya want to stick your head in the sand when you live up here.....might as well if you don't speak french...LoL...

The price we pay for gasoline is based on so many variables, it would take 50 threads to discuss them all. Where I live, there's 'tycoons' and oil experts who make Bush look like a pump jockey at the corner 7-11, and the friends I have in the business tell me this.....

A myriad of complex business decisions, international politics, seasonal issues, dozens of different gasoline blends and Lord knows what else all play a part. You folks who hate Bush and the GOP need to bash them for overspending, immigration issues or something legitimate - I mean, come on. You actually think that 'Evil Oil God' Cheney can phone some Saudi prince or other Middle eastern Mullah or Shiek, and just tell em, "hey, dude - the GOP needs oil at 60 a barrel by October 1, or we're likely to lose in November"...??? And poof, gas is 2 bucks and oil is 59-something, just like that?

Would you prefer that the Democrats phone OPEC and get oil back up to 80 per? Rather pay 3.20 than 2.00? Would that give you a warm feeling and get you off Bush's back?

And as for the oil companies...if they sold gasoline at zero profit, the experts say it would drop 9 cents a gallon. 9 cents. So don't blame them - although I admit during times of record profits it was almost criminal of Exxon to give their retiring CEO a 600 million retirement package. They ought to hang their heads in shame.

Blame two things for the spike in gas prices - one, we ALLOW it to happen. We still buy Suburbans and inhale fuel like there's no tomorrow...so naturally OPEC is gonna charge all the market will stand. And second, the US government, both Republican and Democrat - have strapped US oil producers with regulations and restrictions that have in effect taken local and regional companies totally out of the market. There was a time not long ago they were profitable at 10 bucks a barrel. Now it takes 35-40 just to break even. Can't disturb them spotted owls, you know.

One last thing. If you vote Republican in November based solely on dropping gasoline prices, you're a fool.

I believe he was saying that we all pay the same for a barrel of oil, but your liberal government tacks on another $2.00 CDN per gallon for gas! We have it so good and don't appreciate it (except btester who thinks everything is a conspiracy and hasn't seen his dick for twenty years), IMHO! Guess that is the conservatives fault also? Wanker!

Um, yeah, that is almost exactly what I believe.....and I agree with your points about immigragion and overspending as well.

I remember watching on the news Bush and a group of Saudi's walking, literally, hand in hand at Bush's ranch in Texas. I also know the Bush administration, especially Cheney, are oil tycoons themselves. There is a connection at some point between our current leaders and the price at the pump. I think it's more likely the Bush team just got together with the oil company lobbyists and said something to the effect of "We need lower prices at the pump to help us to continue to help you....." And voila, the price at the pump starts dropping like a rock.

BTW-Folks in my part of the US are still paying $2.90/gal. We're always about .70 cents above the national average.

I understand what is being said..LoL..the trouble with that theory is...Alberta produces enough gas, oil and coal to supply all of Canada and we sell our surplus to the US..we import no oil...and yet pay more than the US...LoL....(we are forced to send our oil\gas to the US to have it refined and than buy it back)

We are taxed high..and I mean high...Alberta ..a conservative province ....is the only debt free province in the history of Canada.....And as we like to say

*Keep your fucking city out of my country*....LoL

During the last 10 years, Canadian demand for crude petroleum has increased 2.6% per year in average, hitting 102.5 million cubic metres in 2005.
Refineries located in central and eastern Canada import crude oil for their refining needs, and process some eastern and western Canadian output. In 2005, less than half of Ontario’s crude oil requirements came from western Canada.
Refineries located in western Canada process western Canadian production exclusively, including crude derived from oil sands.
http://www.statcan.ca/Images/up.gif (http://www.statcan.ca/english/research/11-621-MIE/11-621-MIE2006047.htm#top)
Refineries transformed more imported petroleum than Canadian sourced

In addition to being an exporter of oil, Canada is also an importer. In fact, more than half of the crude oil refined in Canada comes from a foreign source.
In 2000, nearly 60% of crude petroleum in Canada was imported. By 2005, this proportion stood at just about 55%, as Canadian refineries have increased the use of domestically-produced crude oil.

I didn't say to not vote Republican. I said not to on account of falling gas prices. Translated, that means I don't believe the Republicans (or Democrats) are responsible for prices escalating or falling, either - so if you vote Republican, do so for other reasons. Any other reason.:D
