Lately when I have fired up the old DN IRD, I've noticed that until I did a re-boot of the system I had the black screen of death. No error nag, no guide: nothing!
A re-boot brought it all back though!
Anyone else?

I got up yesterday morning and the display on the TV looked like the card was missing. I pulled it and reinserted it and all was well.
Weird!

It has happened to me in the past. I could be a million things but it did not happen again. If it is an isolated thing I would not worry about it. Hell a good patchy rainstorm can f#$% thing up a little.

Yes I agree, but this is recent and has happened more than once. Just wondering?

I have gotten "smartcard is not placed correctly in IRD" or something to that effect. It goes away and boots if I wiggle the card a little. I use an eraser on the card extremely gently. The eraser that crumbles works for me. I clean it up and things are cool. I do it so gently it is like I hardy touch the card. It removes some micro dust and dirt that partially blocks a connection sometimes. Please do not blame me for anything as this is what has worked
for me and was told to me by someone I respect a while back. By the way this will not help your update nag 'LOL' I hope you know I was posting in reply to the peolple above your post.

I am not sure if this is accurate for your ird but mine has an inactivity option sort of like a computer going to sceensaver. I think it is 4 hours without being toched but i am not there to check. Check your settings...

that sounds reasonable, however it never did that b4, just since the new firmware upgrade....possibly a new option in that upgrade, makes me feel a little more at ease....althouth, this romcode is soooo easy and reliable, I never loose too much sleep...unless me and the misses watch too much of the upper 400s....hehe

It is called the 'Inactivity Power Off Mode' and is set by default to the ON position on my 510. I turned mine off for my dvd recorder and I suggest you do the same.

This morning when I got up, powered on the 811 and I had the black screen. I could see the menu and get preview channels but nothing elsewhere until I unplugged to reboot.

Mine was turined off, but it seems the latest revision turned it back on for me.
Having said that there still seem to be periodic black screens (not key change either) and even one time the guide was completely blank until a re-boot.
