Looking to purchase a premodded ps-2 (& games) for my son.
Does anyone here have any for sale?
What should I be on the lookout for?
Should I get an older or later model of the ps-2?
Ebay has well over 2,000 ps-2's for sale and it's a bit overwhelming. I don't want to spend to much money since the ps-3 will be out next month. I plan on purchasing a ps-3 Xmas 2007, so don't want to break the bank on a ps-2.
Or is the modded x-box better?
Thanks

I have the older model ps2. It is not modded I use swap magic. I recommend that you try to find a cheap ps2 (the older model) and buy swap magic. You can burn the games yourself if you have a burner and blank dvds.

Hmm..... modded xbox or ps2? The ps2 arguably has better games but a modded xbox is a beautiful piece of work and requires no disk library (store on hard drive) If it wasn't for resident evil 4 and god of war it would be xbox hands down. Emulation through the xbox is cool too. Many times more apps for the xbox too. If you go with the ps2 I would reccommend getting one with hd loader and hard drive. If you get the xbox your son might not get much time on it as you will be playing it or messing with all the apps. By the way modding any pre 1.6 version xbox is simple. I reccommend that you set up ftp with the box to make it easier and to get arround any M$ updates.
Taglio.
Gonna mod my 360 next week........ still the mod on the og xbox is better.

Taglio,
The PS2 is sweet with the hard drive and the HD loader. gkbham what we arew speaking about is loading a hard drive into the PS2 and then you copy every game you can think of to the drve. Any game because most of them boot afterwards .Then you use the HD loader disk to boot the game they give you a nice menu and you are off an running .No need for originale disk once sopied to hard driv.:)

the ps2 w/hard drive, is that something you have to buy or can you install a hard drive?

My son specifically said PS-2 so that's what I'm going to go with.
I need something easy for him to operate.
Loading a hard-drive - is this an internal or external drive? How hard is it to take out an existing hard drive and replace with another one? Do I need some kind of special format on the new drive in order for the PS-2 to read/write to it?
What is a HD loader and where would I get one? costs?
My theory was to buy a PS-2 modded or chipped or whatever it's called, then purchase or make backups. If I use the HD option, can I rent games and store them on the HD?
Or is the modded X-box going to be a simpler choice? What would I need to get the x-box up and going? What are the costs for xbox and modding software or equipment?

an xbox in canada is under a 100.00 used, and by far the easiest to mod, you get all the info on how to mod it here along with the needed files,
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/311710
you have to have access to a modded xbox or an action replay memcard reader to mod the xbox, but you can simply take an xbox control (buy it used for 10.00 for madcatz brand) and cut the end off and connect a usb plug to it, (all the wires are matched by colors, red wire to red wire, green to green ect.. only 1 wire to disregard and thats the yellow one,) you can get the action replay software to make your pc read the mem card and control you just made on the link i pasted aswell, its a very simple method and there is a huge online communtity for xbox mods over at hxxp://www.xbox-scene.com/forums good luck, oh and hd loader is an application that lets you copy games u rent or buy to your Hard drive, if u need any info whatsoever on modding your xbox pm me or add me to msn lungz_jason@hotmail.com, I totally recommend going with an xbox over a ps2, ur xbox pretty much becomes every system after u mod it, there is emulators for every system up to nintendo 64 and ps1 all the way down to intellivision and atari.

Not sure what to do now. I wanted to buy a modded ps-2 or xbox from ebay but too many systems to find one already modded but not an old modded machine that loads in 2-3 days.
Looks like it's gonna take me a few more weeks to figure out what to do.Xbox sounds easy. Not sure how to load a hard -drive into a ps-2.

i have both, xbox is just as easy as ps2, to put a hd in a ps2 is easy, you buy the network adapter for the bigger ps2, the older one, and pop a hard drive on it and slide it in the back and your done.. The old ps2's had laser problems on it. it may crap out on you. Get an xbox, get a modchip, and be done with it. very easy a lot more flexible and tons of resources out there. go to xbox-scene.com and find a world of knowledge for what you are going to pay for the network adapter and the action replay or swap magic disk, you can get a good modchip thats no solder. definitely the xbox

The tsop mod for the xbox is pretty easy v1.0 - v1.5. Check out eurasia.nu for files and apps. You will only need a big hard drive and an original copy of mechassault or 007 Agent under fire, or splinter Cell. You need one of those games if you are going to work the exploit and load Evox etc. Tsop mod is not for xbox live. Slayers disk does all app loading for you if you want to go that route. Again, check out Eurasia.
I might have an extra xbox if you are interested.

Getting closer to a decision. Son wants a ps-2 but I might purchase an xbox. I guess final decision will depend on the total costs. I guess I'll try do the work myself since I've been out of a hobby since DTV days.
Taglio - How much for your xbox? What is the recommended size hard-drive? How many games can you save to the Xbox hard drive? Sometimes people over simplify things. Does xbox have wireless controllers?
Are there different types of mod chips? Which are better?
Need to do some more research, unfortunately job has all of those sites blocked.

XBox is all around easier to mod....
PS2 is a very intricate install, but once done, it is worth the time and effort.
I just finished a PS2 yesterday.. Matrix Infinity mod chip, cutaway DVD drive and modded case. Completely disassembled and painted. It's sitting on y entertainment center right now.
I'm rather attached to it, but hey, I have 2 more sitting around to do now anyways.
This particular PS2 will sell for $250, due to the amount of case modding.... I can do just a Matrix Infinity install for the cost of the PS2 + $70 + shipping.
I go to pawn shops and buy them most of the time.. they usually have a couple broken ones that I repair for $5 on average.
PS3 will be a flop of a unit.... $600 is too much to ask for a gaming rig, imo.
I know all the specs and what not and I'm just not impressed. Add to that the fact the DVD drive is Blueray and you can forget about the idea of modding one with a chip.. blueray disks are gonna be very damn expensive and right now a blueray drive is going for $800.
I'm sure the PS3 will be a success, but it will be a slow start.
Depending on the age of your son, I'd seriously reconsider a PS3 for Christmas.

[I'll try and post a few pics of my recent PS2 mod tomorrow]
