Hey guys & gals,
I was in the PS-2 section but they convinced me that an xbox mod would be easier. This will be a xmas gift for my 8 year old son.
So I'm assuming once I get my box moddied I can copy games straight to the HD? What's a good size HD? I was thinking of 120g? That's a lot of games.
Does xbox have wireless controllers? Are they worth the additional investment?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I personally plan on purchasing a PS-3 NEXT year (Xmas) when the prices drop.
120 gig would be great. will hold a lot. Yes, there are wireless controllers. I don't like them myself. If you are not clear on the modchip install, consider buying one of the pre-modded boxes offered aroung the net

Xbox modding is relatively easy to do - and damn well worth the investment.
They are the best for the kids - you can copy your expensive games to the hard drive so that the kids can just scroll through a menu and pick the game they want - no messing up your precious game discs!
a 120 is OK, I use a 250, and you can go larger if you want. The newest bios files aren't locked to the old 127gig max anymore.
There are plenty of mod chips out there, some solderless. But what you buy depends on your version of XBox. Once you are ready to take your XBobx apart (and you will need to open it up to verify the version, before you buy anything), head on over to xbox-scene. They have a nice walk through on versioning your XBox. They have so many tuts, that it can get confusing though.
My kids XBox are version 1.0 and 1.1 - and they both use Xenium mod chips. My personal project is a version 1.4 Halo Limited with the Xecuter 3 and the X3 face panel (lcd, bios selector, mod chip deactivate switch, and 2 usb ports for linux). The Xecuter is harder to install and has more features than the Xenium - but the Xenium is a good chip. Very simple to install, and they have very good instructions for loading a new bios.
After modding my Halo box, I found that I didn't even play games much, but I use XBox Media Center more often - since it will play divx and wmv files.
