FTA is defined as "Free To Air".

True FTA = Free, unencrypted (meaning not 'scrambled') satellite transmissions.

Many people seem to be under the impression that "FTA" referred to watching DishNetwork or BellExpressVu, which couldn't be further from the truth. Although many 'FTA' receivers were capable of decrypting these providers' broadcasts; these broadcasts were not Free-To-Air.

There are literally thousands of unencrypted DVB-S (Digital Video Broadcast - Satellite) channels available for viewing. Lyngsat provides a list of many of the FTA channels available from the US here:
