Hi skinerd. You're the guy to ask this question to.

I took the faceplate off my working 501 (unplugged plugin from the motherboard) to get a notch in the cardslot to fit my atmega. I put everything back together and fired up the 501 and noticed the green light didnot come on after about 1 minute of running. Then I remembered I forgot to plugin the faceplate to the motherboard. I immedeatly unplugged the current to the 501, and fixed my mistake (plugged in the faceplate to the motherboard) and re-fired up the 501. After it initialized the sats (0 of 5, 1 of 5, 2 of 5 ect) I then get a message Harddrive error 0457.

Took cover off 501 and made sure everything is plugged in correctly (HD, faceplate, fan ect).

I did a bunch of reading here. Did the menu, 6,3,info,browse,theme,tvvid,play,play and hold recall button for 3 seconds to re-initialize the HD. Didnot help.

The 501 will work with the r102 and the atmega, but lost the HD and pvr functions. They were working. Any recommendations on what to try next ?
thanks

0457 means the 501 does not see the hard drive.

See if it spins up, when turned on, you can feel it.

Took cover off and felt HD as I powered on the 501. Yes HD does spin up.

The dishmod database for that error is..."0457 *NO HARDDRIVE* Check cable make sure there connected! If that Fails it DEAD! Replace CABLES OR HARDDRIVE! Also check that drive is set for master rather than slave. Check for SMART errors also. "

You can pull HD, put in a PC and run Maxtor's drive diagnostics, "Maxblast" on it, see if it is alive or dead.

Thanks Skinerd. I'll look for Maxblast. If you know a link ... I'll look at maxtor's website. Will post back soon.

I downloaded a utility file from Maxtore.com called PwrMxEn.exe

It created a floppy disc and I ran the dianostics from the A prompt. Only had this 40 gig drive connected to my computer.

I ran a short 90 second dianostic and it told me to run a full read dianostic. After a long while it came back and said the HD had errors on it and asked if I wanted to fix them. I said "yes". After that was done it said my HD was failing and created a dianostic code for me to contact maxtor with.

Sound right Skinerd ? I didn't do a low level format. I figured to report what I have learned so far. Do I need a list of drives that are acceptable for the 501 yet ?

I had a similar problem a while back. The ide cable was not snug on the motherboard. Give that a try.

If the HDD is in fact bad, I would suggest going to a 120 gig HDD and make the receiver a 510. Here is a list of compatable HDDs.

Maxtor 34098H4
Maxtor 2F040L0
Maxtor 4K080H4
Maxtor 4R080L0
Maxtor 4r120L0
Seagate ST340015ACE
Seagate ST340810ACE
Seagate ST340825A
Seagate ST380012ACE
Seagate ST380020ACE
Seagate ST3120025ACE

PowerMax is correct, as someone mentioned above, it will do non destructive tests, and reformat (zero out) the drive if needed.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm looking thru that list of harddrives and it's really hard to find any that are available for sale. I got my sights on a 80gb or 120gb from that list. If anyone knows of a good place to find one, please let me know. Was looking at ebay and not much there.
