Check your Fuse & also look for a burnt resistor as they are know for this problem

Thanks coolwind. I remember reading about this somewhere. Anyone have any info on which resistor to look for?Links?

Okay checked the fuses with a multimeter. Both good apparently. But, there's a black plastic knob on top in the satellite in/out(inside the box) that loks a little melted. looks like an adjustment knob or something. Also the power light comes on for a second then goes off when I plug it in and won't go back on with the power button. Anyone have any clue to what happened and how to fix? Thanks.

The black plastic knob is VHF tuning to your coax line out to TV.

So,would that having a melted spot on top cause a power problem causing the IRD to shut down as soon as it powers up? I couldn't find anything esle wrong.

it's not melted, just looks like that, you can pull it off easily an see that it is just a protective cover for the adjustment....

losing power on a 420 is not uncommon, usually a power supply diode fails,
here is a link to id-discussions, they have extensive threads on 420 problems.....

Mods don't get too mad for me posting a link, it's harmless, I think......they have more extensive receiver problems threads

Thought so.We pulled it off and found the adjustment. Damn,I can't see any other problems.

c & p from another place............
Open up the case and looking from the front to the rear, in the lower left area toward you there are some large round blue coloured capacitors.
Now to the immediate right of these components there is a black 1/2" diode soldered at both ends to the board. (it looks like a resistor) The diode is listed as CR14108 on the board. Check this diode to see if it is blown.
With no power to the receiver take a metor set to the diode. Check it by placing the test lead on both sides of the diode and then reverse them.
If it is good you will be getting a reading one way and not the other. If it is bad you will either not get a reading at all, or get a reading both ways through the diode. If so replace, and this should fix your problem with the receiver not powering up.
DIODE BYW100
Circuit Board number CR14108 is the spot location for diode manufacturer part number BYW100, cross referenced to the NTE part number, it is as follows:
BYW100=NYE587 = DIODE-SI,200V, 1A, Ultra fast, DO-41
Radio Shack Part # 276-1102
Which according to the cross reference data, is also the same for BYW100 thru 200

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll get the Radio shack part and try it out. They happen to have a couple in stock locally and they're open on Sunday.
BTW,does anyone know if that nozkt script INS58 V2 is still up? Thanks again.

With you guys help, me and my brother manged to replace the diode. The first on blew in about a minute. It was a bad installtion job. The 2nd diode has been running for about an hour or so,but there's a lot of heat coming off it. Hot enough to burn.Is that supposed to happen? Thanks,Pyotr
