The various WII mod chips are discussed. All mod chips work the same. They patch a few bytes in the DVD drive to make it think a real DVD is in the drive. The code is specific to certain models of wii drives. Read everything to determine how it will work on YOUR wii.

What does modding the wii accomplish? Is it similiar to modding an xbox? I want to get my son's modded (lots of takers on that one) but I don't know if it's worth it. Please advise...

@gkbham, modding allows you to play burnt games, got mine modded and it works great, you just need to have a source to get the games i.e. download or craigslist

(thepiratebay, demonoid) You can probably find somebody on craigslist to mod your wii if you dont want to risk damaging it.

I Modded my Wii with the WiiKey. I depends on what model Drive you have but it is as sime as 5 wires up to I think 8 or 9. you have to solder. I did mine and it is running flawless. I download from net and burn. there are a few things you need to do and can see how to on youtube. Just make sure you get a real Wiikey if you get it.

At most any mod should be 4 wire + power&GND to do all wiis. DMS->D2B is 5 wire like original chips that came out.

Work stable and no problem.. No mod for the D3 integrated controller. Higher wire count chips are old.

When using a modchip with a Wii...is there any loss of functionality? How about with "Online" games? Is it ok to take updates?

Does Nintendo detect modchips...like XBOX??

Just to clarify, if you mod your Wii then play a game that is not from your region i.e. you have North American unit which is NTSC and then download and burn a PAL game, it will ask if you want to update your unit, if you choose yes then you will end up bricking your unit. Most NTSC games will not ask you to update your unit, if it does you should still be okay but the rule of thumb is, if it asks to update, say no and never put that disk in your unit again.

I've recently modded mine and had no problems to date, got lucky that a friend has over a terrabyte worth of games most of which he's tested so I have over a 100 games to play with for the moment and that is just a third of what he had.

I just rent and burn myself. More fun that way.
You need a certain drive to rip them to your drive though.

Ok you can brick your system but you can do some things to make sure you don't.
you can download some programs and run them. they are RegionFrii, WiiBrickBlocker, and rebuild_db-1.0. If you have the correct drive to burn them youcan use Rawdump. RegionFrii will let you change from PAL to NTSC or vice versa. you can search YouTube for videos on how to do this.

I have a d2ckey insalled in my wii for over a year now with no problem, I rent and burn my own games, I have never updated the units firmware so the kids cannot get on the wii shop channel until I do, the question here is can i accept the firmware upgrade with the modchip installed, I assuming if I do I will brick my wii as the disclaimer just before accepting it says something to that fact, there have been games that have asked to upgrade which i've accepted with no issues.

Thanks for any advice.

Whats The Easiest Wii Mod Chip To Install??
Are The Solder Points Really Small?
I Tried To Mod My Ps2 And Ended Up Frying It! The Damn Solder Points Are Super Tiny.

Yeah the solder points are very small and like it has been stated earlier in the thread the difficulty of the install depends on your drive type

Actually, there is a no-modchip method of playing burnt games on the Wii. Do a search on the Zelda Princess mod and WiiGator.

Works great for me for most games....

I took a pal update on my ntsc wii and semi bricked it. there is now software to unbrick it. It worked great. You can update your wii with no problems using the internet just dont use a pal disc. If your unit is ntsc then download ntsc only and you will not have any problems.

also you can buy solderless modchips now. I have not tried them though.

what do you mean by there is actually no modchip to play burnt Wii games. Like I said I had the WiiKey Modchip and it is playing burnt games flawlessly.

zelda twilight princess, and an SD card, and HBC. Next backuplauncher0.3_gamma.zip and you are good to go without even loosening a screw.. cept for dual layer games, and useing DVD+R.

I prefer the chip tho, nintendo can't take that away..

Solderless works if you don't have epoxy on the drive, and have a chip to put it on. Ironically you wont know until you get the screwdriver to take the wii apart, which is usually too late to avert.
Now the wiis without a controller will have to be softmodded like mentioned above, there isnt any other method arising...
