I know this isn't automotive but it's close. I have a 1991 bayliner 1800 with a 1991 90hp force motor. My tilt/trim is real slow going up, Anybody know what the proper way checking or filling the tilt/trim fluide?

Geez, been about a dozen years since I played around with small outboards. I seem to recall that name, is that the low end engine that was done by Mercury?

Anyways doesn't matter, so when you trim the pump whirrs and whirrs and the engine moves very slowly.........need hydralic fluid as it's pumping air.

Hmm..............look at the arms that extend out and raise it, follow the body and you'll see a screw or nut and that's where you add fluid.

Your best bet is to visit the Marine Dealer and ask about purchasing some hydralic fluid as it's a bit low..........then once you've paid for it just ask.....where's the fill plug......can't remember as haven't done it in 5 years???

Once they have your $12, you'll get the info you need, and if you don't follow my instructions and you'll spot it.

The nearst boat dealer is about 75 miles from me. I found where you fill it just not sure if the motor needs to be up or down when checking fluide. I been doing some reading on some boat forums and I've heard both ways.

Hmmm............., well when the motor is UP the the fluid is in the cyclinder behind the piston and the reservoir should be low and when you lower the hydralic fluid returns.

I'd check it in the down position first, notice how much it takes, cap it and raise and lower a couple of times. If no difference try it with the motor up, if you're really that low on fluied, may want to leave the cap screw a little bit loose to bleed the cylinder.......but only if there's no improvement.

Good Luck and keep us informed.

First of all didn't mean to offend by 'low end', manufacturers offer value priced stuff and it's OK (generally older technology and minus some bells & whistles).

Merc's alternate brand is Mariner, not Crusader and you just stirred my memory, Force is Chrysler!!

Most motors go up slow till they hit 20 degrees then the tilt takes over and should then go faster. If it is low on oil you can tell by the the sound it makes.(sucking air). If it needs oil it is leaking out somewhere and could have water (milky looking ).Also low voltage from battery also can make it real slow. Then brushes being worn out can cause this too.(GRINDING SOUND)

GOOD LUCK
