Is this the first time you tried this on this particular computer? If your talking atmega is it jumper or jumperless. Like dvd said above a little more info and we can help.

Try booting to the BIOS and changing the pararell port setting to ECP or ECP/EPP.

check this troubleshooting C&p, posted it earlier today in another thread, may help
C&P
Failed to enter program mode means that there is no comunication between the computer and the atmega.
Assuming the atmega is working then the problem is in the interfase between the pc and the atmega, so there are a lot of posible things wrong.
1.- bad contact between the atmega pads and socket pins.
2.- bad or wrong type cable from pc to programmer.
3.- wrong type of programmer for that atmega.
4.- wrong pc port selected in Jeepers/ file/preferences, the standard parallel port should be in address 0378.
5.- wrong type of parallel port selected in pc bios, try to change to SPP type.
6.- inspect the pins of the chip for trace of dirt or corrosion, clean with a brush.
7.- inspect atmega jumper for false contact.
8.- low voltage from parallel port, try the usb mod.

i have the same problem flashing atmega card. mine was working fine until it froze up . and when i flashed again i got the message failed to enter program mode. then it says full write complete. i checked my cable, cleaned pins. checked everthing i could . i have 2 programmers and 2 cards and both are doing the same.
thanks

If it's a jumperless look for 2 holes labled J1 to the left of the XTAL by P5 and C1. Use a paperclip to jump them and try to erase it again. After you sucessfully do this a few times it should program with out the jump in place.

06-13-2007, 04:56 AM
you checked in Jeepers/ file/preferences that it's at 0378?
bocker59
06-13-2007, 05:04 AM
mine is at 0378 in preferences

in bios you tried SPP? and ECP?
could try what AO is saying, never tried that personally but who knows
you have tried different pfgs? different version of jeepers?
arrrgh lock fuse bits?

If this looks like yours this is what I'm trying to explain. Jump these 2 points. Also check your Lock Fuse settings--Atmel-Atmega 128-lock/fuse settings. They should look like the one pictured.

These atmegas you guys have can be programed without jumpers but did originally come with them. So when they get locked up try this: Jump the first 2 pins the one on the edge and the middle one and try to erase the flash, your programmer looks good bocker59. Read my post above^^^ #15 it shows and tells how to check your fuse/lock. When you get into it follow the picture for the settings and hit write then read to make sure they changed. Ps you guys must be running D*lls so if you do the bios setting like I stated earlier you should be good. I'm going to get some glasses now thanks to your pics.:)

did you try jumping it like AO suggested?
here's another explanation of the procedure, C&P, may help
again, never tried this personally but supposedly it works
C&P
Unlocking Atmega
Take the board out of the programmer & ground pin 1 (PEN - Programming Enable) of Atmega128 to pin 63. This will FORCE the chip into the SRI programming mode.
To put it a simply,
- Place atmega in a way that the dimple on the atmel chip is in the top right corner.
- Now get some very fine insulated copper wire hold one end of it onto pin 1 (first pin above dimple on chip) and place other end to GND pin 63 (second pin down on set of vertical pins to the right).
- Hold it for about 5-10 seconds with card out of programmer.
- Now put card in programmer, repeat above steps.
- After 10 seconds keeping jumper wire in place hit full monty, BUT KEEP THE WIRE IN PLACE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROGRAMMING PROCESS! Let it write.
- Bingo! ... You have restored the eeprom, flash, proper fuse/lock bits....everything will be perfect!

Bocker,
I've had this problem a few times with one of my atmegas, what worked for me was going up to the top in jeepers and clicking the atmel / atmega128 selection and going to erase flash / eeprom, i do that like 3 times.
Also i do the alternative chip erase and then it seems to work.
Hope that might help you some also.

If you got half a write and you were able to erase then the problem might be that you are running to many programs in the background. Relax your almost there. Close some programs like messengers and your virus scan, anything open on top of you clock and try again. Remember to erase it 3x's before attemting a re-write.

thanks AO i'll give it a try again and again and again lol

tried my atmega in my friends programmer tonite and still the same results.is it possible my atmega is looped or locked and if so how do i unlock it. on card has 3 pins on it the other has 10
AOAOAO
06-19-2007, 04:01 AM
I thought you said you got it to erase once? Try the same senarial to erase it jump the pins and if it erases jump then keep it jumped to program it. You can also look for the "Original Junior Roba" program or "Atmega Restore" which is the same program under another name to put it back to factory settings.
