um ... er ... dumb question, but have these two cards been programed before? I wasn't going to say anything till I read that TWO cards were suffering.

CHECK YOUR CONNECTIONS. I was about to pull what hair I have left in my head when I realized that I had a cable undone. So - - - - - check and double check (just a thought).

If you haven't got it going yet here's a C&P that may help...

C&P

Failed to enter program mode means that there is no comunication between the computer and the atmega.

Assuming the atmega is working then the problem is in the interfase between the pc and the atmega, so there are a lot of posible things wrong.

1.- bad contact between the atmega pads and socket pins.
2.- bad or wrong type cable from pc to programmer.
3.- wrong type of programmer for that atmega.
4.- wrong pc port selected in Jeepers/ file/preferences, the standard parallel port should be in address 0378.
5.- wrong type of parallel port selected in pc bios, try to change to SPP type.
6.- inspect the pins of the chip for trace of dirt or corrosion, clean with a brush.
7.- inspect atmega jumper for false contact.
8.- low voltage from parallel port, try the usb mod.
