wondering if it is true that only the 501/508 comes with 80gig drive and the 510 with a 120gig harddrive
also can i upgrade and down grade drive

yes if you put a 120 gb harddrive in a 508 it becomes a 510 or vice versa

When we refer to modifying a "510" we refer to the original configuration.
Same with 501/508's. Putting a 120 gig in a 501/508 will make it appear to be a 510, even system info will report 510.
There are at least 2 types of 510 motherboards, one with a 20 jtag port, and one without.

Same thing just different terms.
True 510 board has no ejtag and tsop types match (AM29LV320DT, M29W320DT, AM29DL323GT).
Refurb 510 board has ejtag (really 508) and tsops may or may not match (u7 will be AM29DL323GT). These were modified by the provider.
Modified 510 board has ejtag and tsops match. Tsops can be AM29LV323DT, AM29LV320DT, M29W320DT, AM29DL323GT. These were created by putting a tsop listed 120gb drive in a 501 or 508.
