I have some questions about how we JTAG receivers. Can someone tell me if my basic, if that, understanding is correct?

The Jtag is connected to the JTAG port or the receiver. We use Jkeys to communicate with the receiver processor and send the READ / WRITE / ERASE commands to the TSOP.

Why hasn't anyone developed a way to READ / WRITE / ERASE the TSOP without using the receiver?

Why can't you dump the image off of a HY29LV160BT (Flash chip on a 301.010) without using the receiver.

Just want to learn. I think there is a solution that doesn't involve my shaky hand holding a jtag. That doesn't involve a LPT port.

Might be the cost is prohibitive if there is another way. There are some very very Very smart people in here. I have to figure if there was an easier way these people would have found it.......;)

This has been done by a few dealers, but it is a rather expensive way to go about the problem. To read the TSOP chip, you need a programmer like the EMP-30 (and for BGA TSOPs, you need a special adapter). Now, google the price of an EMP-30:

And it's BGA adapter:

hxxp://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/409424-module-socket-emp30-tsop40.html

Total cost = $1,000 USD.

That's why most of us go for a $30~$50 jtag. :D

you do not need a programmer. it could be done with other methods but you would either need to unsoldier the chip (hard to do and it takes a long time) or you need to soldier a lot of wires (also hard to do). You may be able to use a chip clip to connect.

What are (if any) the legal issues of possesing the datasheets for the current JTAG-able receivers, and passing them to someone else?

If my stated intentions were to create a device to repair damaged flashes across several platforms (game consoles, hand held devices, and sat receivers) would one still be under the scrutiny of some companies team of pitbull lawyers? Would you still have to live offshore and use coconuts to connect to the internet?
