Looking into buying DVR 501 or 508...Which one has jtag opening at the bottom. I`m not really too good in soldering and don`t want to messup my motherboard.
Also, I can use atmega on both, right?
Thanks

The 501s originally came with a JTAG opening and the 323DT TSOP chips that were not locked. But a lot of 501s have been remanufactured and they get rebuilt with a new chassis with no JTAG hole and locked TSOP chips. So be careful what you are buying. Both the 501 and 508 are easily Jtagged from the top of the motherboard using soldering iron. Even a poor solderguy should not have a problem connecting from the top. But if you get a 508, it's TSOP is usually a 323GT that requires the R44 vidmod to modify the locked sector of it.
Atmega's do fit, but many of them have the programming pins pointed down when the card is inserted. If that is the case, the pins may hit your front housing and keep the board from being inserted all the way. You just need to take a knife or razor and shave down a bit of plastic to allow it to fit.
