How do I disassociate the .conf files from speed dial in Windows 98?

Right click on the file and pick "open with" and then pick "choose program". Scroll down and highlight the program you want associated with the file, and don't forget to check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox. If you don't see your program you want associated with this file in the list, then browse to the program with the browse. Finally, pick OK, and your file will be reassociated.
Hope this helps.

If you want to disable the .cnf association with Speed dial, you can do it easily by going to a DOS (command line) prompt and typing:
assoc.cnf=
(then hit the enter key)
This will eliminate the association of .cnf files with Speed dial. There will be no verification of the change.
Now when you double click on a file that has a .cnf extension, you can *select from a list* and choose notepad.

EXCELLENT!!! I did not know that. Great info Cholla Chomper.

This is why I love this site. So many people hang around here that someone is bound to know something you don't. I have learned so much from just hanging around here.. Add another one to the list.

I don't get an "open with" option. You get that in XP but I'm not so sure about 98, anyway doesn't work for me.

Go to "Folder Options within an open Window and hit the "File Types" tab. Find the extention you wish to change the properties of and hit the "Change Button"

Might as well get some use out of those old machines. Don't think it has enough horsepower for XP. Actually I tried to fire up my old 386 16Mhz the other day...I think it finally died, sent it to the big recycling area in the sky.
