At least I can give a good deed before I leave here.

Ohms I see you reading, what happened to the link in the user control panel to remove myself from here?

The files here aren't tested and guaranteed working, but they are scanned for virus and trojans. I'd be really suprised if you got something like that from our download site. I'd tend to think you picked them up somewhere else. Course, I'm a bit biased too.

I'm not sure if Mili has the delete membership option enabled at this time. I'll have to look into that ghost. In the mean time, slow down and consider where else you could have gotten the funky files. Either way, what files are the suspect ones? At least we can go back and look at them again just in case.

It is not that simple any more JT; however, the files that were found I downloaded from here.

How do I know because everything I downloaded from here went into one folder and that folder name popped up.

When Mili gets that link fixed please PM me.

Until then I will not post any more.

Is this fair enough?

If post count makes you smarter, me and JT must be somewhat Einstein like.
But that ain't that case.
I have been uploading and downloading files here for years, never a trojan or virus.

If you can be specific as to what file, we can check and verify it, one way or the other.

Virus and trojans can happen from just surfing the damn web.

Bingo Crazy, I was thinking along the same lines. Some files will trigger a false virus warning.

Jeepers and AVG free would give a trojan warning. The AVG free version would find it and all other versions on the computer and shut them down so you couldn't use any of them. AVG free wouldn't let you exclude them either, you had to upgrade to AVG pro. And I didn't even download jeepers recently, it happend with an old jeepers. It was something in the AVG pattern file update !!!

I've tried several different AV/firewall combos in the past month the AVG pro was worse than the AVG free on my computer. Zone Alarm security suite was giving me a blue screen at bootup, had to go to safe mode to delete that shit. There have been some issues with the Zone alarm since they were bought out by checkpoint a few years ago. These days AV programs are like cars, gotta test drive a few before you find a good fit for your computer !!!

I am happy with it, it does not slow down hardly at all, especially compared to Norton. Before zone alarm, I tried several others, zone alarm is by far the smoothest.

hey badger...have you ever had a network that had different antivirus running??eg one had norton and one had zone alarm???Do they conflict with each other???

Never done that mike, but I would think it would be safer to do it that way because some av and firewall products catch some things that others don't and vice versa. Seems like it should work if the permissions are set correctly, but there may be a conflict of some sort. Kaspersky is supposed to be a good one too, but I haven't fucked with it. I used cracked panda for a couple years and It worked great, haven't messed with it lately though.

Zone Alarm is by far the best I've tried. Comodo is supposed to be really good too.

Thats what I'm using for a firewall now. I think he was talking about an all in one solution with firewall and antivirus. I usually opt for 2 separate stand alone products for AV and firewall, and usually from different companies. Not sure why, just seems safer to me.

ANY anti-virus software has by default the on-access-scan feature. Assuming a file is downloaded in a compressed archive format, and even if your AV software does not scan withing the archive, as soon as you extracted the files they would be scanned.

Protect yourself people. Here is a simple how-to. :)

1. You need up to date AV signatures.

2. You need to have on-access-scan turned on (normally default)

3. You need to understand that 0-day viruses will not be found by AV until they have become known. Normally, signature updates contain several new variants that were previously 0-day. 0-day means that they are new and have not been reported as viruses yet. This means that you will need to do periodic AV scans of your entire hard drive, preferably every time your signatures are updated.

3a. For non-pc-savvy sat hackers to be able to understand what I’m talking about, you need to think of the virus/antivirus relationship as similar to the
blocker/provider relationship. Public blockers are more likely to be attacked by the provider than private because the provider has seen the public stuff and knows how it works. If you write your own blocker, that means that it is 100% unique, then you are very very safe from the provider because he has never seen it and does not know how it works. I say safe assuming the blocker itself works.  This is the same theory with the virus/antivirus relationship. An attacker, who creates their own malware, can be assured that it will not trigger an antivirus signature right away as it is unknown, or as the term says “0-days of being known”. You can still protect yourself somewhat. See #4.

4. You should use a firewall that blocks both inbound and outbound communications so you will be alerted when a new program tries to access the internet. When it pops up with (do you want to allow XYZ to access the internet), consider what it is asking. Is that a program that was just installed or updated? Then maybe it’s ok to let it. Did you just visit a web site, and now all of a sudden out of nowhere, something is trying to access the internet and you don’t know what it is?. Well then maybe it’s NOT ok to let it. You get the idea right?

5. You should use a hardware firewall/router/NAT appliance. This can be a linksys, netgear, 2-wire, or any number of other devices that ISPs provide. You MUST change the default password, and you should NOT allow any port forwarding. One thing to look for when shopping for one of these is the words "stateful inspection". This "feature" will prevent a simple spoofing attack from defeating the firewall. PEOPLE!!!! These are cheap!!!! GET ONE!!!!. You should not have your PC doing the PPPOE with your ISP. Seriously, get a nat router.

I'll suggest some with wireless. You can find others yourself.
Examples: D-Link DIR-615, Linksys WRT54G, Netgear DGB111G (includes built in DSL modem)

Hope this helps someone. Feel free to ask questions. I speak English, not industry jargon so I encourage you to ask away.

what is the pppoe you are talking about ????

Ohms

what is the pppoe you are talking about ????

PPPOE is how many ISPs give you your IP Address. Some use DHCP to do the same thing. In either case, you should not have your PC performing this function. You should use a front end router that is running NAT.

IF you have to enter your ISP username/password, and/or run some kind of sign in client provided by your ISP, then you don't have a NAT box and should get one.

go to hxxp://whatismyip.com and make note of your ip address. Then go to start/run/cmd and type in the following: "ipconfig" without the quotes ; Look for the address you made note of. You should not see that address ANYWHERE in the ipconfig screen. If you do, you need to do something about it.

badger ol buddy, that's step one out of 100. LOL
here is another test for ya. This is for testing your firewall.
Trojans and other malware call home. Most firewalls will allow any software on your computer to communicate with the internet at will. This is bad, because if you unknowingly get infected with a 0-day malware, it will be able to call home and alert the maker that he has a victim waiting to be exploited.
To find out if your personal firewall allows malware to call home, do the following.
surf on over to hxxp://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm and download leaktest. Run it and follow the instructions. If you are cool, it will tell you "Unable To Connect". If you are not cool, it will tell you something else like "Firewall Penetrated".
Report back. I'm curious as to how many people allow unfettered outbound communications to the internet.

Simple answer. We are testers. We like to tinker with things. Download software and crack it. Run a lot of software we didn't pay for. Tweak, modify, upgrade, tweak some more. You can't do much of this kind of thing with a MAC. Now, I should say, that OSX is a new ball game and this is less true than it used to be, but the underlying theme that has ALWAYS been the MAC trademark is "insulate the users from the hardware". This makes novice type users happy because the system does not ask them questions that they don't understand. It just does what MAC thinks should be done and no one is the wiser. This is the double edged sword that makes MAC both wonderful and horrible at the same time.

With that said, I will say that I know several ROBO GEEKS that use OSX and love it. They tweak it through the console interface just like they were running linux, which in fact is almost true. But these guys do things that I don't have the brain power for.

I have about 10 PCs here in various states of existence. I build them out of spare parts and give them to friends and family. This too is hard to do with a MAC. You have to spend the $$$ to go into the MAC world, and it is not cheap.

I would also like to point out a gross inaccuracy in your premise. MACs are not immune from viruses and malware. On the contrary, they are just as susceptible if not more than a PC. You see it's about a 10000:1 ratio of PCs to MACs. This fact alone is the reason that there are so many PC viruses and so few MAC viruses.

I was hesitant to post this before, but here goes anyway. Ghost has a long history here. Those of us who have been around long enough will always remember Mr. Bean....and how much he HATED his original user title, which was Beenie Baby. The story goes roughly like this: Ghost got into an altercation with law enforcement, and he got shot several times with bean bag bullets. I guess they break ribs and, if I remember correctly, ghost also broke his hand or something like that. Ghost posted the entire story in a thread I started a long time ago about tazering a friend of mine who claimed tazers didn't work. So anyway, mili gave ghost the user title of Mr. Bean after some heated discussion about how he hated the Beenie Baby user title. Seems like every so often ghost kind of goes off the handle. Most of the time he's fine and can be pretty entertaining some times. I think he does drink a fair amount as well; at least it seems that way.

So, that's the story. I'm sure this will all blow over some time soon. I seriously doubt ghost got the software problems from here. Mili's really good about virus checking. It's true though that not all scanners are created equal. Even some of the good ones don't find certain problems, and some lable some software as problems even though they are not. So I'm not discounting that it could have happened. Bottom line is pretty simple no matter how it happened. It's up to you to protect yourself from things like trojans and virus'. Period. Only a fool would expect or trust someone else to do that for them unless that someones specific job is doing such.

You lost your first user name for fighting with a mod and calling him names if I remeber right.
