Thinking about buying an FTA PVR, leaning towards viewsat since I already have a platinum and it works great. On top of that I run a computer company and my suppliers carry them so I just write it off :)

Its pretty obvious the PVR7000 is a PVR...duh, but some of the others say PVR ready. Do you just plug in a hard drive and your good to go? Do the extreme and ultra support this? And is it better to go with the 7000 and get "true" pvr?

Also, with the crap going on its a lot to spend right now on fta, will these boxes act as pvr's for other sources? A cable box for instance that has a line out, can that be plugged into the fta and recorded or is it only gonna record from the satellite input? I wonder if they can be ...GASP... hacked to do this.

Appreciate any info.

Thanks

Ther Ultra and Extreme will not support the PRV function. the only PRV's from VS are the 7000 and the pro however you will have to buy a Hard drive for those. they dont come with the hard drive and when they say PRV ready thats what they mean. Put in a HD and format the hard drive through the menu and it should be PVR ready..

they will work with FTA and not cable boxes.

You didn't mention IF you wanted HDeF?
I would not buy 1 right now if you want HD,as ALL HD channels are going mpeg 4 soon on both providers.
I'd wait to see what boxes are capable of runnin mpeg 4 & work with the new revs.
Meanwhile, rom 206 is in the shadows-what that will do for Fta is undetermined-just like the new revs-that $500.00 + investment is a bit steep if it turns out to be a doorstop in a few months.

Personall,IMO,the 5XX series IRD's from echo[pvr's] are cheap & easy to get going[no mpeg 4] and work great. My 510 has been purrin great since I got it
over 3 yrs ago.[rom 101,102 & atmega 128 & rom 10-102 all run,using No RsA mod,public info,while it lasts]
It is also very easy to rip recorded events from the 5XX Harddrive to PC.

Cheers!

PS-the VS9000 is also a nice PvR,but.....
