Possible to program Atmega when still in IRD?

Now that I got a new laptop with usb I have to go and buy USB to Serial adaptor. The cable is 6 feet long so can I just update the keys with the card still in the ird? Will it take the keys or do I have to pull it out....

I would pull the card to program it, the receiver puts power on the chips.

As far as I have read you can't update while it is still in the ird.
