I want to buy a 360 but not the games:p Does anybody know where I can buy a 360 with a mod chip installed or whatever I need installed to play burned games? Or is there a solderless solution I could do myself? I want to go the cheapest way that doesn't involve me soldering or f*cking up the xbox. Please point in the direction.

when you buy an xbox360, it comes with one of these drives:
htxp://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm
The samsung/toshiba, and hitachi do NOT require ANY soldering to modify, unless its an hitachi 79FK/FL drive. (theres an hitachi 46,47,59,78,79 currently)
Almost ALL Elites, and Halo 3 edition 360s come with either a BenQ (which can't be modified at all, but you CAN extract your DVD Drive key and clone a samsung/toshiba drive to work like the BenQ) or the 79FK/FL drive which needs a 79 passkey. The old samsungs and older hitachi drives can be flashed using your computer with software called iXtreme and a program called 360FW toolbox 4.0, or using pure dos.
you need a silicon image controller, or a Via controller depending if its a hitachi or samsung, respectivly. If you have a Via controller its likley you will need to use a program called Xbox bootmaker to make a bootable floppy/usb drive with modifications done to the chipset so it will see the drive and allow you to read/write to it.
Also, with the hitachi's you have to enter the drive into ModeB in order to program it. This can be done with Slax if you have a 0078 revision drive, or using a 1k resistor and shorting a pin to ground for 500ms on power up for versions 46-59. again, the 79 needs a passkey soldered in place.
Hope this helps you, more information can be found on this all over the net - this is a basic guide to help you figure out what you need to do. You can always install modchips too, but they are a waste of time and money as the iXtreme drive flashes are WAY beyond the code of the latest modchip for the 360 drives.

Yes, its quite tricky as you need to get kernel 4532, linux and an external USB DVD burner.
If you want it to just play burnt games, read post #2
if you have an hitachi you will need a Passkey 79 to flash it, I can guarantee that. All other drives can be done via a Silicon Image or Via controller.

if you legitly mod, and legitly make your own backups, you should be fine online.
If your a pirate after free games, and got lots of torrents going, I can almost guarantee you that the console will be banned from live.

If you dont believe him, then try it yourself.
Playing downloaded games will get your console banned perminantly from live.

there is a science, I am pretty sure its known as electronic engineering...
See, when you download a game that microsoft deliberatly fucks up and puts on a torrent site, it marks your console when you load it... with these nifty marks - it works like a marked ROM102 card.. so they can see who is using this marked game and ban you. The only way your console would be marked is if you played the fucked up release they put on the internet... in which case your console has to be modded, and your not using it for your own legal backups...
Now I am not saying every game on the internet is like this.. but when you download most 'scene' releases, and you notice one thats sub-standard filesize, or one thats an unknown imagetype, or extract and examine 'stealth' data which is identical to other releases you can see these things happening. Looking at Xbins live log, you can see exactly what the media requires and live requests, and your keyvault serial is logged to the requested media and investigated.. Firmware won't get you banned. I know several people with Xtreme 4.2 flashed to their drive who have live and use their originals online that havn't been banned - and likley won't be...
If you backup your legit games, you KNOW its a perfect copy of your retail disc, You are likely going to play it AFTER it retails and not before, and you have a non-public and valid Security Sector, PFI and DMI.
Take it how you want. I tell it how it is. When you are banned, I warned you.
Also all 360's are moddable, with both 'iXtreme' and Xtreme firmwares.. iXtreme is meant to be online and requires stealth data to be present on the disc, Xtreme firmwares only requests a valid security sector. Hitachi 0079FL/FK are whores to do, require a Passkey 79 installed to enable flashing. The rest can be done with a Silicon Image 3x12 SATA card (Hitachi 46-59) and a VIA 6421 card. (samsungs, benq's, & hitachi 78/79)

Enlighten us all on how MS bans consoles then, scort. As I know nothing of what I say - yet greenie-monster concurs..

Not going to explain it here..A little busy with Charlie right now but join a few private sites dedicated to xbox 360 and nothing else and you will understand. I assure you that MS is not putting out any torrents, Please do not even argue that point......

the banning is (best guess) based on some really poorly thought out checks MS live does to verify types of media used for games and timing errors reading burnt games. The theory is only that, as no one really knows, but they got in trouble recently when they banned non modded 360's, the errors they look for can be generated by a dvd lens which is beginning to fail. I think the best approach is to play only the actual game when on live, and anticipate at some point being banned, just because. If you are huge live user I wouldn't ever play any backed up games with the network connected, but there also is a theory that the 360 itself may log what runs on it and when you connect to live it uploads the log...again this is all theory and guesswork. A good site is x***-scene.com for explanations and tutorials.

With Mulleter 10.2 and kreon checker I have not had a single problem as well as others. But if you just download games and do not fix all that is neeeded you are sure to be banned. Read read read before you play online....x***-scene is a great starter but like I said prior to this post find some private ones, after all you found this one...Good luck

Its called firmware stealth and its far from new. It protects the console, but it can't know everything. It can check the datas precise in what and where it should be, but if its not accurate its all worth nothing. Back to my original statement. Yes. Your release can be firmware stealth. It checks out in mulleter and every other program as stealth. Yes it will work. Yes for now it has proven to be effective since you didn't get banned last time. Lets see here.. You have a backup disc, with 4 verification areas. Granted one should be identical on every version of that game. What about the other 3? Should they all be identical on every pressed disc? OK, back to logging. Its obvious MS can log data. The sectors are really small and would be nothing for them to store on their servers. Now, they know what game you played, when you played it, and the 'security' information from the game. It passed initial checks. Now they ensure your disc is 'unique' from everyone elses. Hmm. its not. Why were there soooo many other people playin online at the exact same time with your IDENTICAL 3 security sectors on your 'unique' disc?? strange eh? MS isn't done its battle. Safest way is not to mod at all. If you do mod, at least buy the games you play online. MS is at least nice enough to leave the DVD drive working, your live account in good standing, and the console fully functional after a ban...

You can always install modchips too, but they are a waste of time and money as the iXtreme drive flashes are WAY beyond the code of the latest modchip for the 360 drives.
One thing that needs clarification:
The new Elites with HDMI and BenQ drive can be firmware flashed to play all stealthed backups. I use iXtreme 1.41 on all new Elites I work on. It takes more time to open the 360's case than it takes to flash the DVD drive with modified firmware.
To backup a retail disc, you need a Samsung MS-28 DVD drive from an actual Xbox360, and flash the DVD drive with modified firmware which allows you to rip 360 games to your HD. Best to use Xtreme 5.2 or 5.3 for this. There are like 3 other normal computer DVD drives that can be flashed with Korean firmware to rip games. This method has it's critics that claim the Korean firmwared DVD drive can introduce disc jitter, which MS can detect and use as a reason to ban your 360 console from LIVE.
Having to reflash your 360's drive just to rip games, then have to reflash the drive to iXtreme 1.41 to play the burnt copy is kinda a pain and sooner or later you might flocker something up resulting in a bricked 360.
The easiest way to obtain 360 games is either from buttorrent or better yet, use the newsgroups to obtain your 360 games. You'll have to pay $15-$20/month for newsserver access, but it's fast and you don't have to worry about your ISP blocking torrent downloads. With the newsgroups you can get 5-9 games a day - depending on your ISP download speeds. Best of all, no sharring, just downloads with newsgroups - sweet.
Now is the time to get a 360 and modify it. Very soon there will be new BenQ's which might not be as easly modified as the ones in the stores now.
The MOST IMPORTANT thing about 360 modifying is to make sure you back-up your drive key!!!! If you loose this key, then your 360 will only be good for playing DVD movies (no games - copies or retal). You can write this DVD drive key on a piece of paper or take a Sharpie and write it inside the case. Just don't loose it, or else!!!
