View Full Version : Viewing Options In Ottawa?

Moving from the US up to Ottawa in the very near future.
While I know I can use the Enigma for both systems, what are my options for still getting DISH?
Would a DISH500 still work the same, just having a different elevation? Or would the difference knock the dual LNB ability out of the picture and I'd need to use two separate dish's to get 119 and 110? Along those lines...if I DO need to use two separate dishes, should I assume that I'll need something bigger than the old 18" dishes?
Lastly...not being too familiar with Canadian law, should I worry about the dish's being in public view? Would it be a smart idea to use a BEV dish(s) so as to not attract attention? What are the laws there in the respect of questioning me about legit programming? Could the RCMP just stroll up to my door and ask to see a legit bill from BEV?
I know some of these questions may be silly, but they are honest concerns I have. Haven't really been able to find any full posts that answer them completely.
Any help is most appreciated!

Your too worried about all this... it will all work.
Canadian law may get mad if you have like 10 dishes aimed in all sorts of different directions, but if you have 1 or 2 that should be no problem.. as for the 'get a bell silkscreened one' over the dish - don't matter.. bell sometimes don't even use their bell branded dishes on installs. Plus you can legally buy your own equipment then pay bell a monthly subscription fee. You dont need them to do the install, and you don't need to rent equipment from them for their service.
Dish and bev will still come in, and a dish500 will work. dual LNB brackets will get you 91/82 and 119/110 off 2 seperate 18" dishes with 4 LNB's and some switches as long as you have a clear view of the southern sky.
If the RCMP is going to demand a bill from you, they will also want everything else that could be used with that bill - like all your cards, receivers, TVs, computers, remotes, etc.. as it will be a search warrant. They won't and arn't legally allowed to casually stroll up to the door and say, 'hey, I noticed those dishes are looking suspicious and I suspect your intercepting some programming illegally.. Before I make an ass out of myself and file with the CTRC, can you provide me with a bill so I can have proof your legally receiving reception..' thats breaking a LOT of laws right there..
You can have 10 dishes on your roof all not in service, abiet looking very suspicious to keep installing new dishes and not take the non-working ones down... there's no way they can reliably tell if the dishes are powered and receiving a satellite signal thats being decrypted without a valid access card... least without trespassing and hooking up a power meter to your dish to ensure the 12/18V the IRD is putting out is there, then seeing you watching TV through the window..
I wouldn't be worried unless you plan to make a business out of it, or plan to get all 5 of charlies satellites in, both of starchoices, a DTV setup and both of bells..

If you are an American Citizen moving to Canada for work related purposes or similar you would be one of the lucky few that can legally subscribe to a US Satellite service while in Canada. Your neighbors may want to be your friend so they can have you subscribe a receiver for them too.
Enjoy.

never heard that one before, America takes care of their people, not sure of how the CTRC would look at this though
cypherkid...you'll fit right in Ottawa, just like everyone else. The first question an RCMP officer will ask is "How can I hook up".

I had read a rather lengthy post about this earlier last night. Is that pretty much true? If so what would I have to do? Although as it stands right now... I don't have any active programming with Charlie.
What you say is exactly correct. I'm a US Citizen, and will be coming up on a NAFTA Visa for a new job, then applying for the PR eventually if all goes well with the new jobbie.

Very informative reply. Thanks so much for clearing a lot of that up. I don't know exactly what to expect up there yet, so those are all good things to know. That way I can just pack the ol 500 into the moving truck and not have to worry too much about things for the most part.
