howto USB256Atmega

What you need
1. usbatmega
2. mini usb 5 pin cable
3. tier editor/gen program
3. boxkeys and ird number from your ird (if you do not have boxkeys then a jtag adapter is needed) you can follow the jtag adapter instruction already in place here http://www.bellexpress.vu/enigma_jtag_adapter_howto.html.

Your Bin
use any clean bin, the best bet is download a enigma bin and use it.
Open dark angel tier gen or romripper (any one you wanna use)
We will use dark angel here to make it easy.


Set your timezone, zip code blackout string then click on ppv and generate a ppv string (only one is needed) MAKE SURE THE TWO CHECK BOXES THAT SAY WRITE OTHER INFO AND WRITE OTHER SETTINGS ARE CHECKED

Click on set expire date and set it for a month or so out.

Now click on patch tiers and select the enigma bin you downloaded or which ever bin you wanna use. when it is finished it will tell you it is finished
Make sure the ird number is correct and leave blank if using jtag adapter or fill in boxkeys if not. REMEBER the name of it and where you saved it to.



usb256 Software
open the last version of usbAtmega software which as of now is 3.05
(go ahead and plug it up to your computer)

Select model and provider,

step 1.click on detectAVR, click on eraseAVR,
now click on write avr this will write the supplied rom bin to your card. the new exe will have the new code which will have the latest firmware or any new mecm and map calls embedded and write it to your card.
step 2. click on write eprom bin (this is the bin you just created using the dark angel tier gen above)

This should write alot faster than the rom bin did.
After it is finished click on the read button beside the keys to see if the current keys were applied to the card, once verified you can now unplug your usb256atmega from the cable and stick it in your ird. watch tv.


A few notes
The write avr and write eprom bin are two diferent things.
The write avr is what writes your rom bin. Each revision of the software exe does any coded changes mecm, map calls ect in the EXE. I have used the same EPROM bin for over two months, each time an update comes out I update the rom bin that comes with new version then write my same erpom back to the card I bne using for months.
Eprom bin = the bin you add your tiers, timezone, ird number, local tiers ect to. This is your work, a bin you edited for your own use.


Rom Bin = this is ROM of a real card. Also has the the code for the card Fab5 updates each time there is a new map call, mecm or anything charlie does to counter the device from working is embedded into the EXE of the software. This exe is version specific, if you open version 3.05 it will write the rom bin for version 3.05 and the embedded code on it is own. ( I am not sure how this works but to best o my understanding it is like this)

Mini usb cable. You must use the 5 pin cable and if your card will not write this could be why, I have seen cards detect but now write because of cable. Most of time it will not even detect.

Black screen could be you need a bin with upto date 0106 or could be your box keys are wrong, could be a mixture of tiers the card does not like.
Best thing to do is use a bin that had video before and clean the tiers off it and use it and add new tiers. Tsop firmware has a lot to do with mysterious black screens. (we need more testing on all the reasons for this.)

Quick key change When keys do not roll pull card, plug up cable, copy and paste new keys into the boxes marked keys on the usb256 software and click write!!! thats it!!!
put card back in ird.

This card is as easy as it gets, any thing you see I got wrong here or if you have a better way post it in this thread.

That was a great how to and appreciate the effort and time you put in. Quick question, some of that (black outs) refers to Charlie. If one is interested in using this device to test B&v, the Cdn. zip codes are different than U.S., I assume the software will recognize the different format as valid? Also is support for both Providers equal or does Charlie get priority updating?

It has been historically updated for Charile first then BEV, bigger market share I guess. If you use for BEV there are no ZIP codes as there are no locals for BEV. The software only cares about what is in the BIN.

if there is a problem and the ecm's differ then yes charlie fixes do come out first. :( sucks but there are a lot more charlie people, I can tell ya bev is never to far behind if it is different but I have seen 2(two) times I know of where bev was the next day after a charlie fix.

The blackouts I do not know to answer to, somebody else will have to field that one, It should be the same as any other device as far as that goes,

I have a 6000 ird that can't be jtagged but still takes updates. It's been gathering dust since I fried the jtag interface late one night a few years ago. Tried BFL and both top & bottom points but no joy. I know the boxkeys and irdnum. So... I should be able to get it working again using the USB256atmega correct?

Click the calender tha pops up, click on one of those dates a month or so, or 3 months it doesnt matter. If you dint do anything at all it would still be good for one day.

I am using a 6000 with bev and I just keep getting card not inserted correctly. I have followed the instructions to a tee.

On my old 128 I had to set the fuse bytes to 81 instead of 89. Any Ideal why this ones not working?

Using a clean bn102 and Public numbers.

Note also using the latest 3.0.6 should I try 3.0.5

This is a little confusing so far. been doing plastic / atmega 128s for years.

I have been fighting for a few days following guide. I used Mr tierworks with the Engima dish Eeprom to make tiers. When finished with usb programming of card, this is what finally worked. IRD had public numbers. Have IRD plugged in and in the "off" condtion. Place USB 256 card in receiver. Leave off, NOW listen to the receiver... in a few minutes you can hear it update (CLICK). Now wait another 5 minutes or so. Now turn receiver ON. It will either have picture or acquiring sat message, which will turn to picture in a minute or so.

i am having the most trouble getting wide open teirs using ird 91 on my 3100.10. i have followed the instuctions in the initial post and used dark angel tier gen, although i am getting ppv (im not too concerned about) i am still missing some locals or some of the locals are red. I have my expire date set to feb 28 2008.

is there something i need to do different? when i was using the atmega 128, everything was wide open, is there a way to grap the tiers off the pfg and apply them to my usb atmega?

Do I use my own IRD and boxkeys to program my usb256and leave my receiver intact?

DAn. you need those numbers to match, you can put private numbers on the card if you have a valid DT08 on the card.

OK< IN other words if you have a bin that at one time had video on that ird you can write that bin to the usbatmega, or you can copy the numbers of od it and the dt08 using gendt09v3.3 or newer. either way you will be good to go.

O.k. I have clean 102 bin and ran it through Dark Angel, and saved the new bin. I have the Atmega 256 Loader (4.03) and the latest 1.23 Atmega fix file. How do I combine the 3 to load? If I try to open the Atmega 1.23 file, it says not a valid eeprom.

This tool is to be used for educational purposes and for proof of concept only.

Attached you will find a loader for your Atmega128/256 wafer card. Load your card using settings suited for your particular ISO reader. The program defaults to the standard 3.6864Mhz ISO loader parameter, and can be changed to suit your needs.


It is for the old legacy atmega. WIll not work with the USB type

I think I figured out my problem. Let me know if I am on the right track. The Atmega software already has the latest patch built in to it. It is not a loader software where you have to select the latest (fix) and tell it to load like the old Jeepers used to work. Every new version of the "loader" software also has the latest "fix" as well. Am I back on the right track again?

dragonslayer I really dont understand the question. if the ird has public numbers then you need to use a bin you had working on it before, CLEAN it to rev103, then use dark angel to add tiers and new keys, timezone and leave zip all zeros.
when some new usb software comes out use it to write the bin to the card.

No the usb comes with a bin for public numbers, all you need is updated firmware, no modding will be needed.
IF you do not have public numbers on the ird then you will have to get a jtag adapter
or jtag the ird
or
if you have the boxkeys off the ird you can use the usb-a with private numbers but it will need a valid dt08 on the image.

Same boat, I programed my card more than 30 times and still with black screen, right now I'm using my rom102 with phoenix loader and is working, I read the rom102 and cleaned codespace and save, then writed to the usb256 and nothing, How can I do this to work????:confused:

When the new software comes out it will be easier.
for now to practice you can load the 4.06 software and get the free channles.you will need to make you a eprom bin and go ahead and have it ready.
I like to use mrtierworks and a bin out of the usb folder or a enigma folder.
The enigma works better on getting locals fo me but the mr tierworks I can make one a lot faster.

Ok, when I open the mewest program the drop down menu does not list 4900. DO I just put that in or use one of the others. Also do i just get a bin from the fiiles and save it or do I use dark angel. I am so close to getting mine going its killing me. I almost need pictures to get it going.

Went to try it and i loaded up "USBATMEGA ver 5.03" loaded the driver as the instructions say then when I go to run it I get a "cannot load MFC71.DLL

any help??

pocchia:rolleyes:use the newest ver. 5.03, what are u tryin 2 load when u get that error? u should b, "detect avr","erase avr"(3-5times)"write keys" & then "write cam# & ird #" (in hex form) P.S. after opening file and install drivers double click the bottom file 2 open the actual loader, after 1st time its a very easy product 2 work with, it just takes time 2 get startted(u will miss the small things) you will get it you'll see!! good luck & be patient!!!:)
