USB Atmega help

I am seriously thinking about getting am atmega 256. I have read what I need but dont quite understand. How do I get the box keys off my rec and the rec number. Do I need a programmer or do i program it through the usb cable providded. I'm sure I will have more ? at a later date. Thanks for your help.

How do I get the box keys off my rec and the rec number.
You need a ISO to get you IRD# & Box Keys (if it is unlocked)
OR
You need a J-Tag to get them off the IRD
Do I need a programmer or do i program it through the usb cable providded.
You program it from the U.S.B. cable
(Office Deopt - Ativa - USB A plug / 5-pin mini-B plug)
nothing esle will work 5-pin

I'm sure I will have more ? at a later date. Thanks for your help.
