Some how during the cleaning of my atmega my fuse bytes went bad. I know their suppose to be FF AE 89 FF.......butt now mine are C0 AE 8B FF and I don't know how I can get them back. I've tried the alternate erase and that says the flash/eeprom has been erased. After doing that three times I went to erase flash/eeprom function and that failed. I know it's because the fuse bytes are wrong. Has anyone had this happen? If "yes" were you able to get the fuse bytes back to where their suppose to be? Please help if you can. Thanks.

Try to virginize card with wicked 4.2. It worked for me.

Yes I would first try erasing with different and/or older programs, i.e. virginizing with an old wicked, or a different version of jeepers than you have tried. See if it restores the fuse bits.

If that won't work, look for a program called Junior Roba that will, hopefully, restore your card .

If that doesn't work, you can try the grounding pin 1 and pin 63 method. Note: Never had to do this personally, so try it at your own risk...but lots of people have said it works with troublesome cards. Here's a c&p on how to do it....make sure you find the "dimple" (more like a little circle) on the chip and that you hold it on the top right so you ground the right pins....there are pics around if you are unsure.

C&P

Take the board out of the programmer & ground pin 1 (PEN - Programming Enable) of Atmega128 to pin 63. This will FORCE the chip into the SRI programming mode.

To put it a simply,
- Place atmega in a way that the dimple on the atmel chip is in the top right corner.
- Now get some very fine insulated copper wire hold one end of it onto pin 1 (first pin above dimple on chip) and place other end to GND pin 63 (second pin down on set of vertical pins to the right).
- Hold it for about 5-10 seconds with card out of programmer.
- Now put card in programmer, repeat above steps.
- After 10 seconds keeping jumper wire in place hit full monty, BUT KEEP THE WIRE IN PLACE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROGRAMMING PROCESS! Let it write.
- Bingo! ... You have restored the eeprom, flash, proper fuse/lock bits....

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I will try virginizing first. Don't know if I can do the other. Will let you know.

Just to let everyone know my atmega fuse bytes are back where they should be! I tried virginizing with Wicked 4.2 and lots of other older programs and no luck. I couldn't find the dimple on the chip (LOL) besides that one was way over my head. What I did find was a DOS flash utility that fixed the fuse bytes. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Not sure where I found it ..it's called fbprg16 flash utility. You have to copy all the files to a floppy disk then boot up in DOS. There's a step by step instruction on what to do once your in DOS with the floppy inserted. Very easy to follow and it takes less then three minutes to complete. I used my old computer (Win98SE) to run this program. After it was done I ran Jeepers in my XP computer and did a alternate erase three times...then erase flash/eeprom three times. Then I re-wrote the eeprom and flash using the eep & hex file included in the atmega 128 factory restore with jeepers program. I'm not on my computer that has this flash utility butt if you can't find it I will upload (if that's possible) tomorrow. Just let me know.

I have a similar proplem, but did tried jumping pin 1 and 63. got an other problem my fuse bytes setting changed to EE 8F 02 FF.

I have an atmega 18.0000 with those jumper that you set to program and play for different purpuse. When I did the jumping of pin 1 and 63 it would not work if I left the jumper on the program side... only work half way by puting it on the play side. If I remove the jumper it would give me something about not being an atmega card that I was working with.

open to any thing will try every thing to get it to work again.

Thanks Tijoe
