dn 301 or pansat 250sm??

Greetings,
I am new to this site. I have some fta testing experience. I have a couple coolsats and a pansat. I also have several dn 301s. Would a 301 be more dependable than my other receivers? What would be recquired to get the 301's working? I am very smart and mechanical yet know nothing about jtag card readers or any of that stuff. Where would I start? Is it worth it? Please respond. If you like the hobby and the challenge then a 301.010 is a good, reliable starting point. They are easy to JTAG.

What do you need? An ISO programmer (either USB or Serial depending if your computer has a Serial port), a JTAG, and an unlocked ROM102 (preferred) or an unlocked ROM103 card. Then do a little reading, ask a few questions, download the necessary software and have at it!
