have you tried jeepers?
also for PAL, you must select the correct crystal and 4.50 speed.
Further, PAL released a 2.2.7.. you should try that

cant say for sure about your 501, but on my 508 the legacy atmega 256 card wont slide in far enough to make contact properly. I have an old atmega 128 just designed a bit longer and it works great in the 508.
I imagine the card door/slot could be shaved a bit or something.

256@24mhz /128@18.432mhz all work fine in 5XX iRDs. Currently w/ PAL 2.2.6 + 2.2.7
Erase 128's in Jeepers prior to programming. (Not in PAL 2.2.X..)
Erase 256's in PAL 2.2.X
ISO clock should be 4.50
Make sure to select correct XTAL setting as well.
Then reprogram.

ISO clock should be 4.50
I've always used that setting too, but apparently with certain irds, different settings might work. I found this awhile ago, that you could try if 4.50 doesn't work.
