I had a notebook given to me for free and I would like to use it to run st19 instead on the big ass PC that is next to me tv right now. It only has one serial port. It looks like the serail to USB works for some but not others and I have read that it wil not work with a boot disk, it must be ran in Windows? Is there a reason it works on only some pc's and not others and must be ran in windows? Is the the PCMCIA to serial port like this one a better choice and can it be ran with a bootdisk? hXXp://www.allserial.com/pcmcia_mg-1scb_serial_adapter.html

Yes. you can run ST19 off of my floppy disk makers (in the files section)
with or without auxshare. from C:/ST19XL

IMHO the PCMCIA card is a better choice than a USB adapter.
The pcmcia card will also need drivers to run in DOS from a floppy.
If the laptop wont run XP full version, download micro XP its about 88mb,
a stripped down version that only uses about 30mb of resources at startup. Will run on old laptops.
As SJ pointed out you only need the 2nd port if you want to use Aux card or run more than one IRD from single computer.
Statistics: microXP
Installation Time From End Of Formatting... 4 Mins 25 Secs
RAM Usage On First Installation............... 27.7 Mb*
Handles........................................ ... 1355
Threads.................................... .........110
Processes......................................... .. 11
WINDOWS Folder............................. .... 182 Mb
Items In System32................................. 670
ISO File Size......................................... 88.1 MB
Bud is right. Some adapters do work, but most have issues at some point or another. If you want to be safe, go with the expansion card, and that should work for sure if set up properly. The expansion card should also give you two DB9 ports. Floppy/boot disk version should work too assuming you have a floppy on that laptop.

Will work for sure.
Get ST19 running on win xp (no aux card) while you are wanting for your pcmcia card.
Then you can add the aux command to the bat file when you get your card and ISO added.
I bought pcmcia cards from Hong Kong for 15.00 with shipping works fine.

Hey bro,
I have yet to see a PCMCIA to serial card for $15.00. Do you have a link to where you purchased yours.
Me and others greatly appreciate it. :)

Ebay has them, but they are shipping from Hong Kong
The expansion card I got (regular PCI) ran about $45 new I think, but I bought it at an official computer store that always charges a bit more. You should be able to find one for desktop for $35 easy, and probably about $55 for a laptop.

Very few pcmcia serial cards will work in dos.

Scoob is correct, only if the manufacturer takes the time to make dos drivers will that pcmcia work in dos(tho some do <- so check their site for drivers) but i guess this could be said for most things hehe.
For most reliable emulation a good serial setup with 2 or more comports is the best. Having said that I have been running a test setup of 4 homemade usb devices 2 usb emu and 2 usb isos(not using a serial to usb adapter, they are usb). So far they havent skipped a beat running on an old p2 233 w/ microxp.

Have you tried looking for a docking station for your laptop? I had an older laptop that didnt have any serial ports but the docking station had 2 on it. worked great for me and it should work in DOS as the computer sees the docking station as real hardware at boot. Good thing about it is that most old docking stations can be picked up cheap on ebay! good luck

If you need a pcmcia serial card that has dos drivers, look for the brand name "Socket Serial Card". I have bought a couple of them on Ebay for less that 20 bucks, (used), and they work great.

There's a lot of old laptop with two real com port(only one serial plug and IR blaster hardware on com2). You can use an infra-red rs232 interface to acces your com2 to use aux.
Warning!!!! don't use this interface to write cam as IR interferences may corrupt image, worst loop cam! only read and aux with wireless ir com.
Not sure about giving direct link on this forum.... for schematic google; IR serial transreceiver schematic. PM me if you need help and/or schematic for the working interface i've built.
Best regards

Ok I am a dumb ass, it doesn't have any serial ports. I looked at the VGA port quickly and thought it was a serial port. This laptop is old but not too old, it has a P4 and XP. I don't think I will use this for EMU. To be safe, I would have to buy A docking station plus a pcmia card for it to work, not worth it. I wish My MAX/MEL had a USB connection. CANCOM, where are you??????

If you can find an Eiger Labs card, I have the drivers for that . You can put them on your DOS boot floppy. I've used it in the past.
