I've got some Texas Instruments chips labeled MAX232IN. Are these suitable for Atmega emu conversion use? Are all 232 chips essentially the same? Thanks.

I've used both
232CPE Description (IC 2DVR/2RCVR RS232 5V 16-DIP)
and
232N Description (IC DUAL EIA-232 DRVR/RCVR 16-DIP)
for maxmel / Atmel emulation on cemu and ST19
Should work fine.

Thanks for the reply. I've got a few schematics to convert atmega to emu board but they call for a MAX233ACPP to be used. Can I use a 232 in it's place? If not, does anyone know of an atmega mod which uses 232 chips? I've got them and would rather not have to buy anything else. Thanks.

get the datasheets for both and compare the pinouts on them.

I sugest as empulse has, get the datasheets for the 233 and the 232. If i recall correctly the 233 has a different pin configuration and therefor would require you to make you own schematic for it.

Apparently you can use ether, http://www.dssftp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=472484&postcount=48
The pin outs are different most notably 20/16 pin. Maybe you can complete the info on both versions for future reference. This poster had both working but left no details.

Thanks for the info guys. After checking the datasheets, the 232 needs external caps to function as the 233 has internals. However, I read elsewhere that the flash is not 100% reliable with the setup. I will give it a go and post results when finished. First I need to get some caps. Thanks again.
