I'm pulling the hard drive from the 522 to use elsewhere, what I'm wondering is when I go to replace the 522's HD with a different one is there any special formatting that will need to be done to the new HD before I install it in the 522 ?
If there is could someone please tell what it is that must be done.
TIA

I'm pretty certain that 522's are like the 500-series (501-508-510) in that they only accept certain models and brands of harddrives. This is hard-coded into the firmware.
If you have one of the specified harddrives, you need to "zero it out" using the Maxtor utility or compatible. (This is DIFFERENT from formating!) I believe Workman has a tutorial on this process.

replacing the hd in a 522 is alot harder. you cant drop the firmware down to get it to update. and just popping in a hd wont work. that size drive hd being so cheap right now i would just buy one if you need one. your going to make that 522 worthless.
i had a bad hd in a 522... bought a used 625 from flea bay pulled the main board from the 522 and removed the main board from the 625 installed the 522 board in the 625 unit hooked all conections back up,hd, front pannel wires... booted up without any problems ...all is still working fine

Wiley-x is correct in that the 522 will only accept the 500 series hard drives - but if you have one - they do not need to be married to the firmware like the 500 units - just zero out the H.D. and install it.

I have got to give all who replied here a very

I have posted this question at a few sites
and these are the best replies Ive had, they
are informative and inteligent answers to a
not very diffacult question.
Now I guess I need to find that post by Workman
that Wiley-X mentioned so I can find out more details
Thanks Again my testing Brothers ;)

522 and 625 are basically the same unit. The motherboards are interchangable. It's logical to assume that the harddrive from one would work in the other.
I am just pretty sure that just "any 'ol harddrive" can be thrown in there to replace a bad one.

if you guys have done it and for sure that there is no user data on drive that makes me very happy.
cool.this has been a topic on many forums and was always the solution that it cant be done without j-taging it.
right on. me so happy now.
well then i wonder if you can take one from another 522/625 unit and use it in the external usb slot. since it's formated for that unit already. would that bypass the need for activation or has that been discovered yet?

Searchy4,
Never said that the harddrives were not "married" to a particular receiver. I personally don't know one way or the other... I stick with the 501-508-510's myself.
Workman would probably be the guy to comment here... he is the master of all things PVR.

he claims zero the drive and when you pop it in it will marry itself.
post above him claims he pulled a drive from another unit and it worked unless i read wrong and he basicly just swapped shells of a receiver.
yes i used everything from the flea bay 625 except the main board from the 522 that had the bad hd. did not zero or erease hd . yes i know that the 522 /625 are basicaly the same unit ... in system info of a 522 it will say it is a 625... the 500-series (501-508-510) are not dual tunner receivers ... i think that the hd must be compatible from a dual tunner receiver....not an expert on these newer receivers...maybe just lucky
