I have been working on my first 510 for the last few hours.
Trying to troubleshoot my setup. Bootstrap shows XXX in Jkeys and no boxkeys :(
If you can please answer these, this will help lots:
1. If I jump R44, then Jump OJ1, and turn on IRD... should the red light turn on? In my case, I do not get green or red lights. If I remove OJ1 jumper, it boots normal. (VidMod removed while I troubleshoot)
2. VidMod - OK... trying to see if bad SPDT switch. for all three pins, if I check continuity with a pin and case, all 3 have continuity, no matter what position the switch is in. Is this ok?
3. For jtag, on top, is it ok to use 30AWG wire? I run very short wires from board to back of RJ45 socket. Then RJ45 plug to the DB25 using a short network cable. (I used that wire for modchips, etc. Is it ok to use in JTAG)
Appreciate another quick reply. Been up all nite reading and working on my 510. Cannot search for answers anymore and just thought if I could get direct answers here please.
Thanks.

You don't "jump" R44. You add 9V of DC current to the U7 side of R44 after removing the resistor. Your SPDT switch should be set up as follows:
left: to U6 side of R44.
middle: to U7 side of R44.
right: to 9V transistor battery grounded to IRD chassis.
No, the 510's red light and green light doesn't go on with OJ1 jumpered. Only the 501 and 508s give you illumination of both lights, for whatever reason. What you are describing is normal.
2. VidMod - OK... trying to see if bad SPDT switch. for all three pins, if I check continuity with a pin and case, all 3 have continuity, no matter what position the switch is in. Is this ok?
No. You should have continuity between the left end and the middle leg with the switch in one position and continuity between the right end and the middle leg with the switch thrown in the other position.
3. For jtag, on top, is it ok to use 30AWG wire? I run very short wires from board to back of RJ45 socket. Then RJ45 plug to the DB25 using a short network cable. (I used that wire for modchips, etc. Is it ok to use in JTAG)
That guage should be fine.

Thank you. I got the JTAG working. Reading TSOPS now.
What I needed was :
a new SPDT - problem was the bad SPDT.
a nap. :D - been up too long and mind was asleep.
all seems to be well so far. will find out when it is time to write.

I have not been able to get this up and running yet. Been trying consistently.
Found a P080 U7 image from the files section here for Build DFEA. I have DFED so I think this is close enough.
I open FlashEdit 2.1. Open Bin file and it opens as DP501 Moved BootStrap (I have a 510 and I am thinking it should not matter). I hit Advanced. Then change build from DEFA to DFED. Fix CRC. BOXKEYS and IRD is already public in it. Save As and it saves. Then Save Virgin EEPROM and it saves.
OJ1 jumped
Jkeys 2.1.9 I think... detects my info. Erase Flash 1 3 times.
Select Flash2 - turn on VidMod - Erase Flash 2 3 times. Program Flash 2 and point to that DFED P080 version.
VidMod off
Then EEPROM Program with that virgin EEPROM.
Then close EEPROM programming window. Close JKEYS.
OJ1 opened. JTAG removed.
Replug IRD power. Turn on..put programmed ATMEGA in with public info. wait 10 mins for the marriage. Turn On IRD.. see stuff n screen. Take plug out.
Replug. wait 3 mins. hook up sat cable.. Do check switch... it only sees 119 ODD and nothing else on my SW21 switch. Should see 119 Even and then 110 and 61.5
Oh well... so I unplug and replug and green light is on for 4 hours. Nothing happens. Software is still not updated. SysInfo shows smard card id all 000's and some other info is junk on it.
What am I doing wrong? Please help.
In JKEYs and FlashEdit... is it ok to select 501 since there is no 510?

Info all 00000's something wrong with TSOP bin.
I have never done this (Then change build from DEFA to DFED)
I dont even bother to see if they will update from virgin anymore, some do some dont.
I use workmans Flash Cloner 2_1 and clone the virgin TSOP I married the drive with to the TSOP I saved when I first Jtaged it.
Cloning will write the public IRD info, including the SK key to the original TSOP. Then it will update if its not current software : P405

Bud... OK.. so I downloaded that Cloner... just trying to see how to work it.
I do have the P405 from when I JTAG'ed the receiver - the original.
I married the drive (i think.. not sure how to tell but followed instructions to every detail) using the P080.
So I open up cloner. There are 2 sections. In Menu there is a HowTo button. Errr. how do I load the TSOPS here? I do not see any other buttons?

OK.. my bad.. had to maximize the window.
Source is my P080. Note that Source SK shows invalid stuff and DT08 has public info.
For Destination I use the original P405. In this case... SK is valid and DT08 is invalid.
I am now going to clone Source to Destination.
Save and write again.
I will let you know how this turns out.

BUD02 YOU ROCK!!!!
I tried the flash cloner and wrote that to my IRD. put it in stream and I get TV now. I have been woring on it for about 24 hours now and you saved my weekend.
Thank You.
Now... I can pause live TV, rewind, forward. I have not recorded anything yet. So is it safe to say that my hard rive is married ok?
Also, what is the use of that antenna (UJF) sticking out the back? Is that required?

Sounds good, antenna just enhances sensitivity (dont need line of sight)
Yes peep like workman and others that compile these handy programs
are appreciated. They reduce having to edit in hex to few clicks Thanks.

My procedure for marrying a HD with a new keyset and updating IRD to latest firmware with P080 TSOP and virgin EEPROM created from TSOP:
1. Ground the square pad of OJ1 -- I ground OJ1 to the metal chassis of the IRD with an alligator clip at the end of a foot-long wire; others simply jump the square pad to the round one with a short wire. In any event, power up IRD. The red and green lights should be illuminated at this point if a 501 or 508; no lights should be illuminated if a 510. Attach jtag.
2. Open jkeys. Go to EEPROM Programming. You do NOT need to powercycle the PVR 5XX IRD in jkeys. Just hit "OK," and the trap will set just fine. Program virgin EEPROM. Close window. Go to Flash Programming. Choose Flash 2 (U7) and erase the entire flash. This will take about 30 seconds to complete. Now, once jkeys allows you do to do it, write the P080 U7 TSOP to Flash 2. Close window. Close jkeys.
3. Unplug IRD. Remove jtag. UNGROUND OJ1 (important!). With blockered card in slot, power up/connect to TV and stream the IRD. After satellite acquisition is over, you should be on channel 101. The HD is now married to the IRD with your new keyset.
4. Unplug and unstream IRD. GROUND OJ1. Power up IRD. Again, the red light should be illuminated (again, only if a 501 or a 508). Attach jtag.
5. Open jkeys. Go directly to Flash Programming. Again, you don't need to powercycle the PVR 5XX IRDs -- just hit, "OK," and the trap will set. Choose Flash 2 (U7) and erase SA54 ONLY. This will corrupt the TSOP and cause a forced update of the firmware when the IRD is streamed again. Close window. Close jkeys.
6. Unplug IRD. Remove jtag. UNGROUND OJ1! With blockered card in slot, power up/connect to TV and stream the IRD. Eventually, you will get to the system information screen -- this will take about 20 minutes, so BE PATIENT! Leave the IRD alone during this period of time! If you leave your TV on, you will eventually see a black screen with crude white type that says that your receiver is being updated and to not disturb it. Heed the message! After the latest firmware is updated, the IRD may (or may not) do a check switch, then it will acquire satellite signal and you will get to the system information screen. Note that the "software" (i.e. firmware) should be at the latest (currently at P405).
7. Unplug and unstream IRD. Put everything back together by removing ejtag (if you jtagged topside) and OJ1 grounding/jumping wire and putting the case back together (only two screws!).
8. Power up/connect to TV and stream IRD. Let IRD acquire satellite.
9. Watch TV.
