i had to push r to reset the emu after i start up st19 every time not shure if its a bug on my side or not if i dont do that it dosent comunicate with the card.
I had to press keyboard "R" 13 times and then keyboard "Q" one time to get it to scroll.
Bottom line.........it works now.

Running the DOS version from a floppy, it tells me No Core! even though the ST19.COR file is on the floppy. I even tried putting the file name on the command line.

Same problem here- says NO CORE and the core file is on the dos boot floppy. This is the stream updated core file, updated 7/24 after the latest ecm. I'll try puting an older version of the core file back on from 7/13 and report back on the results.

I doubt it will have any effect, from what I've found, if you simply start st19xl without using any bat file or command switches it will start and does see the cor file, cause if you change the cor file name and start it up the same, it will say "no core!"

change your command line to read like this
st19xl.exe -m -o -pe1
thats if your on Com 1.
Basically change all of you "/" to"-". and you sould be good to go.

OK, replacing the "/" with "-" onthe command line fixed the 'no core!!" problem.
But now I have 'smart card not inserted correcty nag and ST19 is hung (waiting after it displays the keyboard controls on the monitor. It is not halted at the a prompt. It is just waiting for something.
If I hit R, it says waiting for RST - nomatter how many times I hit R, it still says the same thing 'waiting for RST'
I normally only need to replace the st19.exe file and reboot the dos floppy and the IRD comes back up. That does not work with this version.
I tried pulling the wedge card out to get 'plese insert your smart card' nag and then rebooting the floppy and then inserting the wedge card. That doesn't work either. ST19 never scrolls no matter what I do. And I get the 'smart card not inserted correctly' nag.
Any ideas?

Well cover just beat me to the punch, thats exactly whats going on here also.
To further detail what RoadRat is saying, right click on your .bat file (that's the one with the little yellow gear on it labled ST) , then select edit, then change the / preceding all the commands with - instead. Also, reset is required to boot this version of ST19. PGM made that clear with his original post. That means if the system doesn't boot on it's own, push capital R and it should reset and boot.
Another thing is to make sure your running the right 'species' of this version for the way your running st19. There are windows, dos and linux versions included in the file.

JT -- been there tried all that. Now one thing I am unclear about in post #10, do you mean the reset mod will be required for this version to work properly or just using the shift+R reset?

Well, those original post notes (to hit R) were not here, nor were they in the txt file. In any case, hitting R does not help.
I even put v2.7.09 back on to be sure my setups are oK. They are OK.
Hitting R does not work with either of my two setups. No matter how many times I hit R - same results - smart card not inserted correctly on IRD, and waiting for RST on st19.

Just the shift R reset should do it, a software reset. Didn't see any issues myself, so kind of stabbing in the dark here. I'll go back and read PGM's original post and word it just like he did. Maybe that will help.

Hey cover, try this, it worked for me after all this stuff, change the / to - on all the command switches, but make sure you don't have -s in the bat file.
Boot up your dos floppy, DO NOT do a shift+r reset, just wait a few moments and then shift+S to turn snooping on, then boot your IRD, I tried that and my IRD is running fine now.
Anybody else thats been having problems with this dos version let me know if it works for you.

I'm running under DOS, and I also had to change the command switches from "/" to "-" to find the .cor file.
Once the program starts, it does not automatically generate a reset. Pressing any of the following commands on the keyboard will generate a reset: r, R, v, V, s, S.
I didn't try any more, but I assume any of the others would generate a reset as well. Once I give it a reset, everything runs well on a 301.010 . My 508 generates a reset, and does not need the additional keypress.
Oh well......... a small bug in what looks to be a major rewrite.
Keep up the good work, PGM, and thanks!

Started out trying this and like others ran into several problems.
On intial try just replacing the st19xl.exe file got no core!
After trying "/" to "-" and reducing the .bat to basics:
ST19XL.EXE -a -m -pe1 st19.cor
and pressing several buttons s S ect finally got it to boot up
but it would search for keys and eventually give the message
this channel is eligible for instant upgrade. Change the channel
and would repeat the cycle never getting the keys.
After trying several things (faster computer, latest firmware on receiver,
upgrading firmware on two ic interface) with no luck. I replaced the
st19xl.exe with ver 2-7-09. Rebooted and picture came up with freezing.
Did a shift C to save the core. Changed back to ver 2-8-00. Rebooted
comp and receiver and everything worked perfect.
Keys rolled quickly and no extra button presses were needed to reset.
The only two things I think were necessary is the "/" to "-" in the .bat
And a saved working core from the previous version of st19.
The rest may or may not have had any effect. I included the extra steps
just in case.
I used the ironhead 2 chip flash for the atmel in the interface.
t160hq
Thank you t160hq. I managed to reproduce the error, but had yet to figure out an easy fix. I did still have to push r, that's little case r, on the keyboard to get reset and boot up. However, going back to version 2.7.9, booting up until video, then saving the .cor (shift+C), then updating to st19 v2.8.0 took care of it. It seemed like I was getting slightly different results with and without snooping in the .bat file (-s) too.

Glad I could help JT.
On the reset mine has the mili two chip with reset mod. Which is
likely the reason I don't need to hit the r for a reset. Just a guess
though.
t160hq
Internal 3 chip max/mel's here. It seemed like when snooping was enabled, had to reset. When snooping wasn't enabled, didn't have to reset. Results with this version seem to be all over the place. Haven't figured out a pattern or specific cause to it yet. Updating the .cor sure seemed to help though.

i get past the downloading program guide and can watch the info channels. when i switch to a regular channel i get card not inserted properly (301.010 ird).
on some tries, after the program guide is downloaded, the ird will turn itself off then on again.

This version does seem real picky about what it needs to make it work.
Just enabled snooping in the batch. Mine booted up without needing
reset.
Another strange one. Tried my old avr interface with a 8515 and it dosen't
work at all. You just get smartcard not inserted correctly.
So you may need that upgrade to the atmel in a max mel.

In my system updating the .cor file made no difference, nor did changing anything in the command line.
The presence or absence of an aux card makes no difference.
Perhaps some of the ambiguity can be explained by the presence or absence of a reset mod on the interface board. My 301.010 does NOT have the reset mod and needs a keypress to give a reset. My 508, by necessity, does have a reset mod, and starts without a keypress. I am not even sure if the 301.010 would generate a reset even if the mod was in place. A 301.013 SHOULD generate a reset pulse, but I would have to try one to be sure.

This step-by-step procedure worked fine and the IRD came up OK with the 'not authorized' nag. Took about 4 minutes for the nag to go away and the audio/video to come in - maybe for the keys to roll, although I saved core at 11AM ET today 24 July 08. Just checked for key updates and that was exactly what took so long - the keys updated at 5:40 PM ET today so they had to roll in my core.
I believe you should 'fix it till you break it' so I did a little experimenting...
I saved core (shift-C) and powered off the emulation PC and waited until the IRD failed and reset and got the 'smart card not inserted correctly' nag. Then I left the IRD powered on and I powered up the emulation PC and let it boot up to the 'starting' display. I then hit shift-S and the scroll started, the IRD took off with the satellite search screens stepping through until the audio/video popped in with no delay this time.
So it seems I can leave the IRDs powered up and just hit shift-S after rebooting the emulation PCs and that's the only change I need to make for this version to work. (not counting the change from"/" to "-" and removal of the -s in my batch file command line)
Of course I need to keep keyboards on the emulation PCs which is a minor irritation since all my emulation PCs are bare bones with no monitors and no keyboards - just floppy drives for dos boot. I guess that's minor - just needs a little more room on the shelf for the keyboards with the emulation PCs in my basement.

Why unstable? Perhaps b/c he has re-written a LOT of code, hence the version 2.8 designation rather then 2.7.1x. It is towards the goal of a complete emu of the st19xl cor.
give the guy a break...come on!! How many versions have been unstable?
Out of 38 public releases, I can remember 2 being unstable...including the current v2.8.
Both 'unstable' versions have something to do with the reset/timing with ird.
Now, how many versions of other testing software have been unstable?? Well, if we are talking Enigma or USBAtmega, it is almost every one.
Just sit back and use one of the other 15 testing devices until PGM sorts this out...don't worry, he will figure it out.

Will this happen every time keys roll?
Actually, yesterday at 7 PM ET, I used a core that was stream updated and saved and removed from the floppy drive at 11 AM ET. Subsequently, the DN keys had rolled at 5:40 PM ET so my core was not updated with the latest keys when I later used it at 7 PM ET. It took about 4-5 minutes for the keys to roll and until they rolled I got the 'not authorized" nag. After 4-5 minutes audio/video popped in just fine.
Just to be sure, I then saved core and rebooted. The IRD came up and stepped through the Satellite search screens and the audio/video popped in immediately.
So, at least in this one case the core did not have the latest keys and st19 still worked ok after the 4-5 minutes delay until the keys rolled.
So, based on my sample of one, I'd guess that once you get it going, the keys will roll OK.

I had to remove the -s from my batch file command line. Then with the IRD powered on and the 'smart card not inserted correctly' nag displayed, I booted my st19 emulation PC. Then I wait until the ST19 boots up and gets past the "found aux card" and finally gets to the "starting..." line. At that point I hit shift-S and the scroll starts and the IRD takes off to step through the satellite search screens. After that it's normal with the startup either immediate or delayed while the keys update. The -s had to be removed from the command line. It would not scroll until I removed the -s.
This is with a 4900 or 3900 IRD.

I stand corrected... In my earlier post I said I believed that v 2.8.00 would roll the keys. I was both right and wrong... It seems st19 v2.8.00 can roll the keys but needs a reboot to do it. At least for me...
The DN keys rolled around 10PM ET today 25 July 08. I think they went active around 10:40 PM ET, because my st19 IRD froze about that time. The IRD then rebooted and I got the 'the smart card inserted is not the proper card for this receiver' nag. I left the IRD powered on and did not save core - just rebooted my dos emuation PC. Hit shift-S and st19 started to scroll, the IRD sequenced through the satellite search screens and then gave me the 'you are not authorized...' nag for about 4-5 minutes until the keys rolled. So it appears that in my case st19 will not roll the keys on the fly, but needs to be rebooted to get them to roll.
Next time this happens, I'll check to see if the new keys are reported and I'll try saving core before I reboot the emulation PC to see if the keys actually got downloaded but could not be activated without a reboot. I'll know that is the case, if the keys are reported to have rolled and after saving core, the st19 boots up and starts the audio/video decoding immediately without having to wait for the 4-5 minutes. That would mean the keys rolled, the keys downloaded, but a reboot was required to activate them.
I'll get to the bottom of this key issue yet...

Yes, you always need to put a space between the commands.
A question though...
Did it actually work with the -s in there? Mine would not work with the -s. I had to remove the -s from the command line and then hit shift-S after st19 started. This is with a 3900 or 4900 IRD and dos boot floppy in the emulation PC.
It seems that with this version of st19 (v2.8.00), there is a lot of experimenting with each setup to get them going and the exact configuration and steps needed are configuration dependent.
